Women's Football

Recommended Posts

I 'very noticed lately in newspapers, TV and online that upcoming games now seem to prioritise women's games  by for example, listing their games immediately after The English Premiership. Same online. We now see a lot more women's  games on TV. E.G, Today Hibs v .Rangers

So what's the problem?  No problem with women's football but as this 'featuring/prioritising' elevating the woman's game above (expected crowd numbers ), especially on TV  That means further dilution of TV money as more is channeled off to that sector and therefore even less is available for the likes of Scottish Championship, etc.

This is  NOT a rant against the women's game, just highlighting further constraints as we've  seen before with BBC especially unable to compete for games. This impacts North of the border as BBC Scotland live off scraps.

Women's football has been identified as a growth market and will receive funding to encourage that growth, this funding will come at the expense of growth in other areas of the game, non league football, part time football and it will eventually have an effect on our men's team. Many clubs will introduce a women's team as they will need the funding this brings to help them survive, this has nothing to do with the growth of the women's game but is down to identifying a badly needed income stream.

You can compare it to the growth in cycling, when the olympic committee realised we were pretty good at cycling they massively increased the funding in a bid to chase medals, the funding went from £5.4 million in Sydney 2000 to £28.7 million for Paris in 2024, this increase in funding has come at the expense of other olympic sports and has seen many athletes in other sports having to self fund their olympic experience.

You can see the effect of the increase in funding and media coverage in cycling as there are more cyclists on the road now than ever before.....they will be hoping for that same growth in women's football.

Interesting to read that we are looking to start womens/girls football within the club. There is a good article in the courier  (if you can read it) where there is a good outline of our plans. Basically in a nut shell, we will soon start up an under 10 and under 8 girls teams, based at gardyne.

There was repeated emphasis that we wouldn’t be rushing it and taking players from other teams just to get the numbers, instead grow it slowly from the younger ages and upwards.
