Scotland’s drink drive limit is being lowered and will come into effect on Friday 5th December.

The new limit is 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. Just two thirds of a pint is all it takes to be over Scotland’s new drink-drive limit.

If there's one thing I can't stand it's drink drivers. Mind you I've become a little bit more sympathetic since I started driving, sometimes if you've only had one or two it's tempting to take a short drive rather than get a taxi. Really though if you can afford to run your own car then you can afford the odd taxi or bus. I just don't drink anything if I know I might have to drive and I wish other people did the same. I find it hard to have any sympathy for people who have been under the influence then got into an accident because of it. It must be horrible for the relatives or friends of the real victims to know that's why these accidents happened.

I'm not sure of the science behind the laws of driving the next day so a lot of those might be a bit heavy handed but this is one of the rare times I'm happy with the strict approach being taken. The way I see it, especially after seeing mates and other countries attitudes towards it, is this can only be a good thing.

I have never ever did drink and drive, not because I'm a goody two shows, but because after loosing a family member to a driver who had been drinking and arguing with his wife while in the car who failed to stop in time. So you could say, we learned the hard way about drinking and driving.

I was robbed of a sibling at a very young age and the damage that day has lasted for the rest of our lives, especially on my mother.

So yeah, I have no sympathy for drivers who have been charged for driving and driving.

I don't know how that crime gets to me so much because I don't care about most of them and I've never been personally effected like you and a lot of others have. As I said it can only be a good thing.

I used to have to work every other sunday, went to the match had a good scoop after the game, never thinking that I would be over the limit on a sunday morning,[may well have been on some occasions], whereas now, I think a lot of peeps may have too adjust their sat/sun night celebrations or they may be losing their jobs.

this limit is virtually a drink nothing or your nicked.

allowing 50mics is for things like you may have eaten/drank something with alcohol trace in it.

ie mouthwash....

The rule of thumb for the next day is 1hr per unit + 1hr - but there's debate over whether it should be counted from when you start or when you finish drinking. The former makes more sense because your body processes alcohol while you're still drinking but counting from the latter should mean there's no doubt.

Personally I'd say 5 pints in a night and you're pushing it for being fine to drive the next day.

Coincidentally a new measure of 2/3 of a pint was brought in by law earlier this year.

It was more a Brewdog thing to be able to serve up high ABV beers in smaller measures, but still...

I'm from the school of not driving if you've had anything, but the day after thing is a bit of a quagmire or certainly is set to become.

5 pints of what? A beer can be anything from 4 and a bit % to 6%. Maybe the time has come like the French that brethalizers are mandatory for all drivers.

Limit should be zero.. If you've had a drink, you don't get behind the wheel of a car.

The zero limit is fairly unworkable, mouthwash's can contain alcohol for starters. Even after the fallout from the shooting on HMS Astute in Southampton a few years ago it was accepted that a zero limit just wasn't feasible even though the Navy were happy to introduce it the experts advised against it.

Fair point. I'd say "average strength", so 4% or thereabouts. That's 11.5 units.

I think that the person who is driving is the one who should really enforce the zero drink rule, at least that way you know when you get behind the wheel of a car that you are possibly not breaking any laws and in a fit state to drive.
