not bad Wattie and you can see we're getting closer to a squad if Boating does sign as you have McGhee, Kerr, Byrne, French, Rudden(not my fave tbh), Portales, Pineda, Anderson, Reilly and Legzdins not mentioned who with a left back could give your 11 a game no problem

Hard to say until we see the  Mexican lads but going on what we know I’d go with the following line up for most of the matches with Finn anchoring the midfield and Lyall playing in a free role and instruction to get himself in the box

               McCracken

         Ashcroft Shaugnessy

French                                   Beck

                     Finn
Mulligan    McGhee          Tiffany

                     Cameron
                    Robinson

When we go up against the ugly sisters I’d go with 3 centre halves with Beck & French as wing backs

                  McCracken

  Ashcroft Shaugnessy Portales

French                                       Beck

                    McGhee

      Mulligan Cameron Tiffany
                    Robinson

I find it difficult to consider Robertson as a premier midfielder. To me, he is nowhere near it.  I would have Byrne every time as  a defensive midfielder, against him. We all see things differently.

I think it’s a fair point you make in that Byrne would be a better and even safer  option and I wouldn’t have many complaints if thats what we went with .

I just think with the natural ability Finn has ( or game awareness as Tony Doc calls it ) it would be good to hand him the jersey and see if he has it in him to make it his own, we would soon find out .

From what I seen last night albeit Byrne was only on for 20 mins he looks to be shot to pieces . Finn has looked much better however the attributes needed on the top league are pace , strength , height and being an athlete and to really be strong off the ball . Finn has real technique on the ball and for that I really hope he can grasp it this year and get loads of game time

I would agree that Byrne didn't look too hot, but Roberston is way too lightweight. Tidy but lightweight. He wins very few tackles. It would be great if he just became the midfielder to die for, but he just doesn't look like it to me. We will be defending plenty in the coming season. That appears not to be his strong point. And we will not be able to carry passengers in our midfield. If we play Tiffoney, McCowan and Cameron, we are going to need ball winners in there to support them. Or I think we will be walked over, as we were at times in the season just finished.

Fin won more than a few tackles last night. However the best midfield in the country (McGregor and Hatate) aren't exactly heavyweights, neither is Scotland's midfield of McGregor and Gilmour, as long as you have the technique, intelligence and game awareness it can overcome any lack in physique.
