Dundee Boss Paul Hartley Lays Down Challenge to Disappointing Duo

Source: The Courier

Dundee boss Paul Hartley has challenged Phil Roberts and Simon Ferry to return for pre-season training ready to stake a claim for a regular starting place in his first-choice XI.

Roberts, who was formerly at Falkirk, was signed last May but has only made 10 appearances for the Dark Blues and was loaned out to Championship side Alloa in February.

The 21-year-old failed to impress with the Wasps and his last game for them was back on April 8 against Hearts.

Dundee-born Ferry was snapped up last summer after he left Portsmouth but his season has been disrupted by injury and illness and he has made just 22 appearances for Hartley.

The manager said: “Phil Roberts has been disappointing since he came here and he’d admit that himself. He is under contract for another year so we’ve told him to come back for pre-season and give it another go. If he comes back here, works hard and impresses, then he’ll get another chance.

“It has also been too stop-start for Simon so we need him to be back fit for the start of pre-season and get a good one under his belt. That’s what he needs because I know there’s a very good player in there. He’s just not had a run of games to show it because of his injuries and illnesses.

“The squad will be much stronger next season with the players we’ve brought in so it’s a challenge for everyone to come back fit. They will all need to hit the ground running.â€
