Calum Davidson in the Courier saying he turned down the Dundee managerial position when Bowyer got the boot. IMHO, having him as boss would have been a total disaster.

Thankfully, he didn't know it but he done us a huge favour.

Sensible decision from him. Did himself a favour as well as us.

Not so sure why people would have formed the above opinions. Yes he is dour with the media at best, he’s bitter when his team get beat but he won two trophies and delivered 2 top sixes finishes. His budget was cut massively and his final season they were struggling but far from being adrift. The fact is he knocked back Dundee as he was able to see Nelms for what he is. It looks like we have landed with a good manager eventually, how many of our previous managers would people picked over Davidson.

Davidson won 2 cups, largely with Tommy Wright's squad. He was excellent at maintaining the squad he built and delivering success - phenomenal job to begin with.

The problems started and are still ongoing at St Johnstone because of his absolutely atrocious recruitment. We were a club that was a blank canvas in the summer and needed someone to build a squad. Just look at who Calum Davidson signed for and in many cases, paid money for at St Johnstone. He was allegedly given the highest budgets the Brown family has ever allowed at St Johnstone due to his success and this is what he signed:

Danny McNamara - Loan from Milwall.

Isaac Olaofe - Loan from Milwall.

Craig Conway

Craig Bryson

James Brown - Loan from Milwall (later made permanent)

Charlie Gilmour

Glenn Middleton - Loan from Rangers.

Zdenek Zlamal - Loan from Hearts.

Guy Melamed

Hayden Muller - Loan from Milwall.

Reece Devine - Loan from Man United.

Ali Crawford - Loan from Bolton (later made permanent)

Lars Dendoncker - Loan from Brighton.

Cammy McPherson - Loan from St Mirren (Paid a fee to keep)

Eetu Vertainen

Efe Ambrose

Jacob Butterfield

Viv Solamon-Otabor

Tony Gallacher

Nadir Ciftci

John Mahon (Undisclosed fee)

Melker Hallberg

Theo Bair (Undisclosed fee)

Tom Lang - Loan from Cardiff

Jahmal Hector-Ingram.

How many could you say were genuine successes for St Johnstone? Personally, I'd say Melamed for definite although he left on a free after 6 months and Hallberg was a tidy midfielder. The rest? I've genuinely not heard of a manager sign so many consistent flops. If we were in a position where we just needed tidied over and maintained and maybe improved coaching, Davidson would've been an excellent appointment but for what we needed in the summer, I can't think of anyone more ill-suited to building a squad than a man with that sort of track record.

Bullet dodged is an understatement IMO.

I’d rather focus on  Docs season so far with out speculating wildly what might or might not have been? It’s still early days, Its going well, let’s just hope he manages to keep making positive steps forward and the revolving door stops.

Last line on CD - What matters for most football fans is winning trophies and the fact is, he was not only the manager for both wins but the assistant manager previously. Hardly a cv that reads “bullet dodged”

I hope both succeed in their current roles.
