SPFL Winter break to be scrapped from 2024/25 Season

2024/25 Scottish Premiership start date revealed as winter break ditched due to UEFA club competitions expansion.

The SPFL have confirmed that there will be NO top flight winter break next season as they revealed key dates for the 2024/25 campaign.

The move comes as the new cycle of UEFA club competition matchdays increases from six fixtures to 10. The expansion of the league phase of the Champions League and Europa League - with each running until the end of January - has put extra pressure on the domestic calendar meaning that the Scottish Premiership will not break up in January next year.

The Premiership, Championship, League One and Two seasons will all kick off on the weekend of August 2/3/4 with the top league finishing on the weekend of May 17/18. The three lower divisions will finish on the first weekend in May before the play-offs begin. The Viaplay Cup will kick-off the season as per usual and get up and running in mid-July. In order to get the competition finished before Christmas, like this season, the quarter-final stage will be scheduled on a weekend due to a lack of available midweek dates in the first part of the season.

Start and end dates confirmed for next season, along with the full schedule for the Viaplay Cup...

The SPFL has today confirmed some key dates for next season, which is the first campaign in the new cycle of UEFA club competitions with an associated increase from six to 10 UEFA league phase matchdays.

The Premiership, Championship, League 1, and League 2 will all kick off on the weekend of August 2/3/4, with the Premiership concluding on the weekend of May 17/18.

Clubs in the Championship, League 1 and League 2 will finish on the first weekend in May before the play-offs get under way.

The expansion of the UEFA club competitions – the league phase of the Champions League and Europa League each run until the end of January – exerts additional pressure on the domestic calendar and means there will be no scheduled Premiership winter break in season 2024/25.

The group stage of the Viaplay Cup will again begin in mid-July, and to enable the competition to be completed before Christmas, the quarter-finals will be scheduled on a weekend due to the lack of available domestic midweeks in the first half of the season.

SPFL Trust Trophy dates will be confirmed in due course, while fixtures for the 2024/25 League season are likely to be published towards the end of June.

As I said in my other post, the biggest change is that there will be no winter break from next season. I don't know about the rest of you, but I hated the winter break and glad to see the back off it!
