"As I said earlier, we've moved towards thinking about football expectation. We need to balance that because there's still the laws of the game we're governed by, but we want to move to more 'what would football expect here, what would they understand?'.

"We consulted with the top referees and Premiership managers, we asked them to come and give us their views, we've looked at that and I think we're now on the same page. I've visited six or seven clubs this week, and I have to say that generally they're very happy with the interpretation that we'll adopt moving forward with handball.

"There will be some changes, there will be differences in how we approach handball, but I think that will be for the benefit of football, and the benefit of Scottish football in particular."

Under the new rules, this handball incident in the Hearts v Rangers game, was not given by the ref or Var.

However, the sceptic in me thinks, that if this happened in the Hearts box, Rangers would have been given a penalty.

If this new change to the handball rule is consistent, with all teams and games, then fair enough, but one swallow a summer does not make.

So, a penalty for you or not?

Another rule that has changed, which I welcome. Only the club captain will only be allowed to approach the referee. This rule has been in rugby for as long as I can remember. Good move.

Seen them given for less last season. Not a penalty in the good old days but with the micro analysis that's infiltrated and is, to some extent, ruining the game it probably was.

Will this new interpretation be applied fairly and evenly over the coming season? No.

Would The The Rangers have been given the penalty today if the tables were turned? It's hard to say no given historical misinterpretations.
