Love Scott Bain. Best keeper we have had in a long time. However...one slight (and I mean very slight) criticism for me is that he never ever looks like saving a penalty. Watching Hearts penalty again on Sportscene he never seems to make much attempt and always looks like he makes the strikers mind up for them. Like I say, only a tiny criticism, still think the guy is quality.

Goalkeepers generally peak between 30 and 36. Scotty is only 23. I think it's amazing that he's this good at that age so I can't bring myself to criticise anything about his game.

Absolutely fantastic signing from Hartley. Two years back I was moaning on message boards about our inability to spot quality youngsters. I've got f*ck all to moan about these days on that score.

Brilliant keeper - capable of bad days like the rest of us I suppose.

Wasn't his best day yesterday and I remember one of his clearances in particular going miles in the air and coming back down about 20 yards from where he had launched it.

Love Bain as well. However I completely agree. It was the same against the DABS last year against the biter, both he and Juanma wait and wait and wait and Bain too easily plops himself on the deck before the striker had to make his mind up. Any decent pen taker watching him would know how to put it past him.

That all said, there are few keepers who do much different and Bain's got the all round game, so it's really minor criticisms. He'll improve with age and hopefully we see him for many years to come.

Keeper should have no chance from a penalty, is not 'expected' to save them and can't be criticised for not saving them.

Disagree that they should have no chance. If they pick a side and dive with conviction, they have a really good chance of saving it. If they get sent the wrong way then fair enough. Speroni did this and had a great record for saving pens.

Don't agree. I have a 50% chance. Same as a one on one in my opinion.

I hate to do this to you DD....

But you're wrong...

http://www.scienceofsocceronline.com/2009/04/penalty-kicks-by-numbers.html

Statistically, goalies only guess the right direction 40% of the time...

And of those 40% only manage to stop between 25 - 30%

WAY below 50% (closer to 12%)

(As an actual example - in the 2014 English Premiership 14 of 87 penalties resulted in No Goal... and that figure includes misses (IE not 'saved') which is.... 16% of all penalties taken )

Anyone who expects a keeper to save a pen is kidding themselves.

I always assume it's going to be scored, and take a save as a bonus. A 'Steven Thompson' ...well they're hilarious! Poor boy had to squirm through it all on 'Sportscene' too. There's no excuse for that, he should be fined for it.
