Match Aftermath: Vs Aberdeen (22 Aug 2015)

In all seriousness though, we went into the game missing Thomson, Low and Loy who would all have been starters and then Tankulic who would have been another attacking option. Ferry doesn't have the same degree of influence as the first of those three so Hartley instead opted to go for a back 3 which made sense. I don't really know what we could have sent out there that would have delivered a drastically different footballing style. Our second string players are poorer than Aberdeen's first string so we're always going to be on the back foot so utilising the players who could actually handle that is a good idea.

In the first half, Stewart up front had a bit of a nightmare and no one seemed confident in their own abilities to create things. Aberdeen had some chances but they were all sort of half chances that our back 3 mostly had covered.

In the second half, there was a bit more belief in our attackers and we gave Aberdeen a bit of work to do defensively and with a bit of luck, we could have went a goal up. Their first goal was very well worked and scored at the perfect time. We tried to work our way back in but Aberdeen specialise in seeing games out and although Carreiro come on and showed a few good touches, we were not going to change the game.

Although I want to challenge with everyone, the simple reality is that we're only going to give Aberdeen and Celtic a proper game with our best 11 on the park this season. Unless we have that, it's just a case of trying our best and hoping to catch them on an off day and/or finding a bit of luck. Our second string isn't that poor though and I think we would have taken points off of most teams in the league today.

Good post, spot on.

Why would we have taken a thrashing?

We went there with damage limitation

Huge let down for a good size travelling support

'Damage limitation' ≠ Playing cautiously

We had creative players on the pitch and we did give Aberdeen a go at times. Since we knew we would find it difficult to win the midfield battles, we set out to be strong defensively. Our good players didn't show up in the first half but that wasn't anything to do with our team selection.

Beaten by a better team. Hemmings missed our only real chance, a great one at that, an other than 15 minutes at the start of the second we struggled to impose ourselves. Think the defensive set up was as much to do with our lack options than anything.

Won't lose too much sleep, better sides will lose at Pittodrie. On to next week with a big cup tie and a big game at home to Inverness.

Good post but Tankulic is never another attacking option...useless. Like with Roberts we would be better playing with 10 men.

I know Low has a history of injuries but don't know if the are recurring. He missed 4 games or so with a bruise to his foot and now it's his groin! Is Loy's injury the same as he was out most of last season. Did he come back too early and was tempted with the cup final?

People criticising Roberts, Tank and Ferry being a waste of a wage but I'd add Gadz to that list. Not his fault, but is he a defender or midfielder? How many injuries would we need for him to be called into play?

Yeah, I wonder if these players ever think 'what's the point of this'...'am I contributing to society in this role?' 'do I deserve a wage?'
