Been a bit of talk about referee's and their performances in their games with us this season. Here are some stats over the first 5 games...

Dundee have had 12 bookings and 1 red in the first 5 games.

Opposition have only had 6 bookings (4 of which come from Hearts) and no reds.

We have conceded 2 penalties and have been awarded none.

We received 3 bookings and 1 red card yesterday compared to 1 yellow card for Aberdeen - despite committing 5 less fouls. We had more  booking than Hearts (5 v 4) despite committing 6 less fouls.

A look at the cards table tells it's own story - miraculous seeing as we haven't been involved in any dirty games...

Dundee 12 yellow 1 red

Partick 10 yellow 2 red (Reds = 2 of the 10 yellows & 1 straight red)

Hearts 11 yellow 0 red

Motherwell 10 yellow 1 red (Red = 2 of the 10 yellows)

Celtic 10 yellow 0 red

Kilmarnock 10 yellow 0 red

Hamilton 9 yellow 0 red
Inverness 8 yellow 0 red
Dundee united 7 yellow 0 red
Aberdeen 6 yellow 0 red
Ross County 6 yellow 0 red
St Johnstone 5 yellow 0 red

You can draw your own conclusions from the information, but I find it really hard to believe we are the dirtiest team in this league. One of the criticism's that our own fans make is that we are not physical enough and don't get stuck in enough at times - yet we somehow have the most bookings in the league?!  :what:

There's no way that every referee (or even the last five) in Scotland hates Dundee..

We're sitting top of the disciplinary table because we're mis timing too many challenges and being forced into commiting "professional" fouls (Julens yesterday and Stewart's against St Johnstone being two examples)

It's not about refs hating Dundee. It's about other teams manipulating refs, we simply don't do it.

Trying to play football is fine but,as we've seen already, teams in Scotland know how to stop it. Bullying and then straight at refs the minute we put a tackle in. If anyone thinks other managers don't know that we're weak just look at our last 4 games. Like wee boys compared to how streetwise they were.

Shinnie, Logan and Taylor all had worse fouls yesterday than any of our players. Not booked, because Madden knows they'll moan like hell. He also knows Hartley is a soft touch, especially after the game against St. Johnstone at Dens last season where every other team in the league would have been demanding he was stepped down.

It's part of the game and unless we realise that teams will exploit it.

Agree with Blythswood's angle that he's been putting across for a few weeks now.

We don't pressure referee's on the pitch and accept pretty much every decision with little fuss (McGowan exempt lol) . Most other clubs particularly the bigger ones do (pressure the officials). It's part of the game now (sadly IMO but if others are playing it, we have to also)

We are a soft touch and aren't very streetwise as a team when it comes to the "other" side of the game. I mentioned it a few times last season that teams were coming to Dens and physically bullying us with shoves, off the ball kicks and general cynicism. It's been exactly the same this season so far.

Anyone who sits near the away dugout in the Main Stand will also know that most away management teams that come to Dens leave their technical area constantly and hastle the fourth official over every decision that goes against their team.

Theys stats are pretty incredible when we are probably one of the softest teams in the league and actually try to play football instead of the 90 minutes of hammer and tongs that a lot of teams in this league adopt, particularly when visiting Dens.

I would never like to see us employ the blatant cheating of Hearts and Aiden Connolly/MacKay-Steven/Pawlett/ but we need to realise that side of the game is very influential on the poor refs we have. Likewise the absolute maulers at St. Johnstone.

We need to find a balance between how Hartley wants to play and how he needs to play. He needs to accept that it's more of a boxing match than chess or we're never going to win anything.
