At the risk of getting pelters, he plays open attacking football, I think he's much maligned. I did hear that we could have had him instead of Brown but he wanted a permanent contract instead of the 'interim' gig. Didn't matter as it was a fait accompli, the puppet master got his man.

I think Calderwood is a bit of a figure of fun with his sunbed tan but he's actually got a pretty decent record.

His record at Dunfermline and Aberdeen was impressive. He's 60 now though. His time might well have passed and his methods might be a little dated.

You think about Jocky and Keegan making ill-advised returns and wonder if Calderwood is better off just enjoying his retirement.

You could well be right, who knows, I guess if he does get a gig somewhere we'll see. There are some good old managers out there though, Claudio Ranieri is doing a decent job at Leicester, not that I'm saying they're pea's from the same pod.

I wouldn't write Calderwood off as I just don't know if he could still do a job. Like you say he has a good record in this league so might be worth a punt for a relegation-threatened team like United.

Calderwood's a bully, plain and simple. Remember when Ryan O'Leary was suffering with depression and mentioned that Calderwood didn't take kindly to it:

'He persevered and became one to watch after gate-crashing Aberdeen’s first-team at 16 under Steve Paterson, but his sacking led to a dark downward spiral.

He added: “I just felt so far from home in Glasgow. Between that and my successive shoulder injuries, my problems were simply exacerbated. Steve Paterson’s replacement, Jimmy Calderwood, made it clear that he thought I was soft.

“At this point I hated life and I turned down a new three-year deal. His response was to freeze me out of the team at all levels.

“He even held a team meeting — in front of all the players — to tell everyone that they should steer clear of me, that I would be out of the game within 18 months because my attitude was so bad.â€

Having toughed out the remainder of his deal, O’Leary was still a man in demand but not even an offer from Arsenal could save him from his slump. He said: The thought of Arsenal terrified me, thinking about how good the other players would be compared to me. I felt physically sick.

“I went on holiday to Italy with a friend and played in a game of fives out there, just between locals, and was terrible. That night I went back to my friend’s house and broke down. I felt hopeless and helpless.â€
