Fifa 16 Gets A Tele Thumbs Up – But Dundee And United Teams Fall Short

The long wait is over! Finally, almost two months after the 2015-16 football season got back under way the new Fifa is out.

Fifa 16 was released today (September 24) and the Evening Telegraph’s George Cran and Liam Kennedy got their mits on the controllers a whole day earlier than the rest of the UK – not that they were gloating to anybody or anything…

So, for those who haven’t been able to have a looksee at the new edition, here’s a few things George found:

Dundee United are rated miles ahead of Dundee

Despite what the current Scottish Premiership table tells us and the fact both were in last season’s top six, EA expect a whole lot more from tangerine side of Tannadice Street than the dark blue.

Most Arabs expect a whole lot more from their side in real life, too, but that’s by the by. A few players plucked from obscurity in lower leagues that haven’t featured in the game before has meant, presumably, a bit of guesswork has had to be used on the individual player stats.

Dundee20150923_234103-e1443100697164-960x527.jRory Loy, apparently.

Rory Loy is rapid. Not that he’s slow in real life but he put Kane Hemmings and the entire United backline to shame in the first Discovery derby clash (a 2-0 win for me in control of the Dark Blues against Liam’s Tangerines with Loy grabbing both).

Obviously, those in charge of stats at Fifa 16 haven’t seen Scott Bain play because his virtual doppelganger is a shadow of the real man.

Dundee United

United can pass the ball well but struggled to find the net. Liam’s rusty finishing skills might be the cause but there was a fair reflection of the way Dundee United are looking at the moment.

More unknowns signed over the summer mean players like Luis Zwick and Mark Durnan have pretty low ratings but overall for United and Dundee the game is not far off bar a few glaring individual ratings.

Gameplay

There does seem to be a step forward from last year’s game with a real zip to some of the games.

There’s a bit more variety between players of different standards – poor players play bobbly passes to team-mates who then have a bobbly touch, making it tough to play good football with poor teams and vice versa with the top sides.

The referee’s disappearing foam has been added, too, which is a nice touch.

Verdict

So far so good. For football gamers Fifa, as always, have delivered.

The matches are fluid at times but also scruffy at others creating a balance between fantasy and realism which is good (although I wouldn’t mind a few more of my overly-ambitious efforts finding the target).

The addition of ladies national teams is interesting as well while the career mode seems to have been improved for the first time in a few years. Thumbs up.
