Dundee Backline Must Prepare Safe Platform For Attackers Says Julen

Julen Etxabeguren admits there is a huge weight of responsibility on Dundee defenders’ shoulders to change their ways.

Because the Spanish centre-half believes if he and his fellow backline produce their ‘A’ game, the Dark Blues could be an unstoppable force this season.

While Paul Hartley’s men have looked a more potent force in the final third this campaign, the same old problems have been apparent at the back.

That was obvious for all to see in the club’s last outing — the 3-3 home draw with Ross County on Saturday.

But the former Real Sociedad man doesn’t want this trend to continue.

Julen understands that the Dark Blues have some talented players in their forward ranks but by not keeping things clean at the other end the defenders are undoing the good work produced further forward.

That’s something the 24-year-old from the Basque Country, who returned to the side for the Staggies draw, is keen to change this weekend when Motherwell come to town.

“Offensively, we did great in the last game. Defensively was not so good,†he said.

“We have a really talented group of players at this football club. There is absolutely no doubt about that at all.

“We also have lots of players in the forward areas who can hurt teams we play.

“As defenders, it is our job to give them the best platform to perform that we can.

“The only way we can do that is by keeping clean sheets.

“We have done enough of that this season.

“We want the forwards and the midfield players to be confident that we can keep things tight for them.

“Only then will the fans start to see the best of us as a team.

“It is a big responsibility on our shoulders but we must live up to that if we want to achieve our goals this season.â€

While Julen is happy with the Dark Blues’ campaign so far, he admits he is not happy with the club’s defensive record.

He believes if they can tighten things up, the points will flow freely.

“So far, we could have had more points this season,†said Etxabeguren.

“A lot of that has to do with our defending. We need to start keeping clean sheets to boost the team’s confidence.

“If you see the replays of the goals we have conceded lately it’s obvious we have to do a lot better defensively.

“We will learn from what we have done on the pitch so far.

“We are working to improve these mistakes and to make sure they never happen again.

“If we want to finish in the top six, we know we have to improve as a team and defensively.â€

Dundee have not quite hit the heights they managed to achieve on the first day, Julen’s debut, against Kilmarnock.

But the big defender is sure they will get back to that, having only displayed flashes of their ability in the time since.

“We have shown we can play really, really well,†said Etxabeguren.

“We need to make sure we translate that to results and points.

“We are lacking any kind of consistency this season.

“We need to start playing well in both halves of games and also from one week to the next.

“Only in flashes this term have we really shown the fans what we can do.

“Our aim for the whole season is to finish in the top half.

“Consistency is going to be key for us moving forward. It’s something we need to address.â€

Once we get PH and his coaching staff tae work a bit harder on DFC defence, I think then we will have the making of a full quality team that other teams will fear.
