Paul Hartley: Dundee Strikers Are On The Boil

Paul Hartley is relishing the battle among his frontmen to be Dundee’s top dog.  Rory Loy leads the way among the Dark Blues’ strikers with six strikes so far this season.  Greg Stewart has five, with Kane Hemmings finding the net four times.

Paul admits it’s a long way from the situation he found himself in at times last term, when goals were hard to come by, bar a brief period of success for David Clarkson.

â€œWe knew we had to strengthen in that area,†he said.  â€œWe feel like we have goals now where we maybe didn’t last season. We have been working on combination play with the two of them in training, with Greg at times also. As a team, we always create chances and, if we can keep doing that for those three, we will do well this season.

â€œThey’ve got six, five and four — Loy has started just four games for his six.â€

The key, as always, in these situations is always going to be fitness. And, so far, Loy is the one who has struggled to stay fit, although he’s certainly made up for it when he’s started.

â€œIf we can keep the three of them fit this season, we will have goals in us,†said Paul. “Looking back, maybe Rory shouldn’t have played the derby game. It was hard, though, because he wanted to play. Hopefully, Loy and Hemmings can play together week-in, week-out. I can see them forming a partnership — the signs of an understanding are there.â€

On the emergence of Loy as a key player in his Dark Blues’ XI, Paul continued:

“His overall work rate and performances are good but he is also a handful. He keeps going. He works the centre-halves every minute he is on the pitch. We think there are loads of goals there for us.â€

The forgotten attacker in all of this is deadline-day signing Rhys Healey, who struck twice for the Development side in last week’s 3-1 win over Partick.  The Cardiff City man hasn’t been given his chance to shine for Dundee since his arrival but Paul says that’s not due to a lack of talent.

â€œHe hasn’t had a chance really,†said Paul. “We have thrown him on in games but we still feel he is a wee bit away in terms of match sharpness. He is working really hard in training to get up to speed because he hasn’t played a lot of games. What he has to do is bide his time and make sure he has an impact when he comes on to the pitch.â€

Meanwhile, the manager has admitted the injury suffered by defender Kosta Gadzhalov is not as bad as first feared.  The Bulgarian dislocated his shoulder in pre-season and was expected to go under the knife to sort the problem out.  But that’s turned out not to be the case, with medical opinion saying a course of rehab will do the trick for the 26-year-old.

â€œKosta doesn’t need surgery,†said Paul.  â€œWe thought he would but he’s OK. It will just be rehab for him. He might be back after the international break. That would be a massive boost for us.â€
