Dundee fans are being urged to step up to the plate and make sure their voice remains heard on the Dens Park board.

The Dundee FC Supporters Society have called a special general meeting in a bid to get their representation in the club boardroom back up to full strength.

And they are also seeking fresh blood for their own board.

Their agreement with Dark Blues’ owner Tim Keyes and his Football Partners Scotland group entitles them to two seats on the Dens board.

One is designed to give the club technical assistance and is filled by long-time fan Bob Hynd, an architect.

The other gives the fans their voice and that’s been vacant since Colin Reid stood down.

There are also vacancies on the society board and the hope is via the SGM, on November 18, they can be filled.

Former club and society director Dave Forbes in considering putting his name forward and allowing the support to decide if he should again take a leading role in representing them.

Whether or not that happens the veteran of many a fund raising campaign to help Dundee believes it’s vital the support continues to take an active interest.

“We’re back in the Premiership and getting results, so things look good at the moment,†said Dave.

“I hope that continues for a long time, but Dundee fans know better than anyone that you can never tell what lies just round the corner.

“That’s why it’s important that the supporters society remains strong, active and properly represented on the club board.

“I really do hope the fans are never needed again like they were in the past and I understand the people drifting away.

“And I know the time you have to devote when you are active in the society but I think it is something that is good for the club.â€

In an open letter to members, society board member Brian Lawrence echoed those sentiments.

He also made reference of the difficulties caused by Dundee assuming control of the official website’s TV service, something that was the society’s responsibility until this season.

“Once again the society board has been subjected to significant change over the last year or so.,†he said. “Not only have two of the board’s most senior, and most prominent, members resigned from their positions but the removal by the club of DFCTV rights has seen some of the society’s major income streams unexpectedly curtailed.

“On and off the field the club seems to be progressing steadily under the stewardship of FPS and I’m sure we’d all agree that, given the turmoil of recent years, this is a most welcome situation for all of us that have Dundee FC at heart.

“As most of you will know the DFCSS is now entitled to two representatives on the club board of directors, these two representatives carry out entirely different roles and are selected through differing channels.

“The resignation of the outgoing fan’s representative (Colin Reid) has left a void that needs to be filled if the society is to continue in its efforts to work with and assist the club board on the road to success. The second representative remains in place and is continuing to provide his support to the club board.

“The continued support, financial and otherwise, of the DFCSS membership is essential as we aim to continue to work for stability with the club board.â€

Next month’s SGM will see discussion of a review of the group’s role at Dens but the most pressing need is for new board members.

Nominations open on October 20.
