Back To Basics

Time to stop trying to be so clever, cavalier and after yesterday, just simply mental.

To quote Ivan - no square pegs in round holes.  Felt a bit sorry for Hemmings yesterday.  One minute right mid, next minute left mid, next minute centre forward.  Lets leave 'Total Football' to the Dutch, who are more than quite good at it.  Felt a bit sorry for Meggatt as well, who could be a solid LB for us but was never going to be good enough at CB.

Play 4-4-2, or as close as we can get to it.  We might think we play 4-4-2 at times, with Stewart on the right but his game involves moving round the pitch and creating space, so he doesn't often occupy that part of the pitch.

We need to decide who our 'replacement' for KT is when he is unavailable.  Harkins and Ross might be able to play centre mid when KT is alongside them but certainly not when he is absent.  Not a like-for-like replacement but that player has to be McGowan imo.

The left side of defence is being targeted when Holt plays there and we suffer.  If he is continue in that position he needs to be given protection by a player who is used to playing in that position.  On his home debut Calder looked like he could run all day and looked like he could build some sort of link with Holt.

Personally I agree with most of what you've said, I  can't see us doing it though. PH seems to enjoy tweaking with things too much, yesterday was a disaster, I can forgive it if we don't see that set up again, as long as he's learned from it some good might have come out of it. I'm guessing he thought if we played to our strengths then we might get an 'edge' but as most of us have said, looking at the team sheet it just looked.....wrong.

I'd be happy to go with the 4-4-2ish set up but if he goes back to his 4-2-3-1 at least it gives us stability (but still no cover for the FB's).

Hard to argue with any of the sentiment in these posts.

The proof is in what comes next. In fairness to Hartley, we haven't seen the 5 across the back rubbish since it backfired spectacularly, so maybe he does take it on board when it doesn't work?

Guesses for the starting 11 next week anyone?
