Shame we couldn't combine the attributes of Holt and Meggatt into one player cos we would have one hell of a left back imo.

As long as we see Holt as this attacking, over-lapping player then we will continue to struggle in that area.  I said a while back that the few times I saw him play for QOS he seemed to spend more time in the opponents penalty box than his own.  Anyone remember what system QOS played when he was playing for them?

A lot of boys seem to have written Meggatt off already on the basis of a couple of appearances and let's say, 'mediocre' performances.  I still think the guy is worth a run at LB to see what he can give us.

On the basis of our square pegs for square holes thinking we don't need boys playing left back who struggle to kick with their left foot.  Irvine as cover for RB for me.

Left back is a real weak spot for us this season with Holt being turned inside out continually and Irvine poor when he got his chance.

On his showings so far, Meggatt isn't the answer either as he way out of his depth up against this level of opposition and I don't see PH taking a risk and starting him there.

The only solution I see is to go with Holt and give him a bit more support.

I have noticed a real improvement in McGinn's performances since Holt joined us and that is because the opposition are now targeting Holt and leaving McGinn's side of the field alone.

I mentioned this last week and was shot down. A definite problem that teams are targeting. I like Holt as a player but is way too slow to turn and run back. We have lost several goals and points this way. Hayes is a tricky player but he sped past Holt like he wasn't there and lost us the game at Aberdeen. Last week, Higginbottom had him in knots before crossing for their goal. Don't know the immediate answer but we can't have a 6ft 1in full back and a 5ft 8in centre half. Maybe swop them round?

I like Holt. He hasn't covered himself in glory but can't help but think there is a player in there. We really need to get support in front of him to help him settle though.

Agree with all of that.  Unless we play someone like Calder (or Curran?) in front of him he will get hung out to dry 9 times out of 10.  In the right set up with the right players around him he can be a great attacking option.

We murdered Killie on day one then we tore Hearts apart for much of the first half at Dens. Since then we've done ok and scraped a few wins. We've been competitive mostly but we've rarely dominated teams.

I'm wondering if other teams have quickly sussed out that we have two fairly inexperienced full-backs (at this level) responsible for providing both our attacking width and our defensive cover on the flanks. Calder has improved the situation but two solid wide players, one left and one right, would allow us to revert to 4-4-2 when needed. Maybe it's not something Hartley can fix until next summer but we look a bit predictable in wide areas at the moment and I think we're putting too much pressure on our full-backs.

There a very few full backs/ wing backs in the world that are both.right to the teams like Madrid with Marcello man city with kolarov all the way to the boy Robertson that the dabs sold.fozzy is another one.all play left back and excellent going forward but poor defensively. *** knows why they aren't as full back (defending) is the easiest position to play. Holt will be the same but he is a good player. the problem he has is other teams make sure they cover for the wing back goes forward but Hartley doesn't. still wondering why he leaves Holt who is probably our tallest player and good in the air back on the half way line for corners
