"Some United fans said to me, ‘you’ve effectively sold the cup final with these two leaving’ but I was told we had the players to cover it. That turned out not to be the case."

He seriously thought United had the players at the club to cover for the loss of GMS and Armstrong? Did McNamara give the green light to flog their best players by saying they had good enough cover?

What a club. I think they need a spell in the Championship to re-think things.

Could you imagine the consequences for United if they are relegated? Third biggest playing budget in the Premiership, gigantic and useless squad plus any new desperation deals that Pantyliner pushes through in January..

Ooft!

52 players on the books already with talk of another 3/4 players in January, that's Romanov at Hearts kind of stuff. Must be some size of wage bill each week.

To be fair, I think that sort of figure doesn't tell much. If you count their first team and development squad on their website, you get 47 and 6 of them are out on loan. The same methodology with us gets us up to 40 with 5 out on loan.

The biggest issue they could face is if they don't have relegation clauses written into current contracts. 9 of their contracts are expiring this summer which isn't really much and of the higher earners, it only includes Ryan McGowan.

Thompson said just before they signed the keeper they had 51 players on the books. He also stated they had the 3rd biggest budget in the league that's the crucial bit Harry.

As far as I can see, there are a few other players that have been used in the 20s who aren't listed as part of their squad but they are like 16 so it doesn't seem that significant. They had the 3rd biggest attendances in the league up until the start of the season (Hearts got promoted but their wage budget will also have gone up quite a bit) so that doesn't really seem that mental. They sold players for good money and have been consistently serving their debt that way over some time.

It just depends how well they've planned for the worst case scenario tbh. Thompson has done very well there and as much as he's been slated, he's supported the management team and given them the financial backing. He might have made a bad decision to sell Armstrong as early as he did but he seems to sound like he understands their current financial situation well and they will cut their cloth as much as they need to.

I get the feeling that United fans have had such an utterly delusional feel good factor on the go given a period of quite extraordinary luck in a few good youth players and lower league signings. When the quality reduced to normal and they realised that their current crop has been nowhere as good as previous groups, they have went mental and are now blaming Stephen Thompson for supporting the philosophy that they all bought into themselves.
