Dundee Can Still Hit Euro Heights This Season Says Nicky Low

Recommended Posts

Nicky Low knows quality when he sees it, having been on title-chasing Aberdeen’s books last season.

And the midfielder is convinced there’s more than enough of the stuff in Dundee’s dressing-room.

So much so, he’s sure the Dark Blues can mount a serious charge towards the Premiership European places.

“There are plenty of players here who are of the quality of Aberdeen,†he said.

“Having been with them for a lot of years, you get used to a certain standard of training and quality of player.

“I have to say I haven’t noticed a difference when I’ve come here.

“There are certainly players in this dressing-room who have the quality to play at the top of this division.

“And we are confident, come the end of the season, that’s where we will be.â€

Low does accept, though, things have been far from rosy for the Dark Blues so far in 2015/16.

Dundee sit seventh on 18 points, level with Ross County and Hamilton above them, but they’ve won just once in the last seven games.

11074745.jpg-960x527.jpg?resize=670%2C36Low doesn’t see why the Dee can’t reproduce their explosive form they displayed at the start of the season with a 4-0 win at Killie

While Low thinks it’s an immediate worry, he’s sure the worm will turn at some point.

“Performances have not resulted in points this season,†he said.

“We were good at the start and should have got more on the board but the last few performances have not been so good.

“The players we’ve got here, we know we can turn things around.

“We have a lot of quality in the dressing-room.

“All it will take is one result to kick-start our season.â€

The former Dons midfielder says a key indicator of Dundee’s campaign could be where they sit in January.

He is hoping the club can get their act together by then, so they’re in a position to mount a challenge in the top six of the division.

“We are a little off it but I wouldn’t say we are too far away from where we want to be,†said Low.

“A couple of results gets you right back in the mix, though.

“Aberdeen will be up with Celtic in one and two but, after that, we need to be one of those teams fighting for three, four, five and six.

“It’s our job to claw some points back before Christmas because we want to be right there and fighting by the time the new year comes around.â€

One thing that can never be doubted, according to Low, is the spirit within as well as the confidence and belief that this campaign could be Dundee’s best in their recent history.

“We are a confident bunch,†he said. “It’s not the case that we have let our heads drop in the squad.

“We know we have quality and we know we will get things right.

“We are not as well placed as we would have liked but we have the ability and spirit to turn things around pretty quickly.â€

In Paul Hartley’s first top-flight campaign, as well as the Dark Blues’ return to the big time, Dundee managed to finish sixth.

The aim this season is to gate-crash the Premiership top four.

Low knows it’s going to be tough but he’s certainly not complaining.

“It is a lot harder division this season, than it was last,†he said.

“This year, the league is stronger with Hearts coming up and Ross County really strengthening.

“Every team is better and that makes every game harder. That’s not a bad thing, though, as players we want the league to be more competitive.â€

I have now set my own sights  a good bit lower this season. It may be he case, as Nicky Low suggests above, DFC will finish the season in the top six.

Although, to be honest, now I do not think I would be too disappointed, if they did not. They may well do. But I could easily accept, we are still trying to

build a team to consolidate, our regular position in the higher realms of Scottish Football (I think that sounds maybe a bit too fancy bearing in mind, it's

Scottish Fitba, we're talking aboot)...But you know what I mean :) If we can consolidate this season, I am sure I will be a happy man :)  And if, while

doing so, we find, "the ither lot" in a state of suicidal shock, or in a state of slaverin', sloppy, weet- eyed, hysterical, frenzy, as their Club, find theirselves

going to that place that offers little joy or respite. A division where only the best and good can escape from, I will definitely again, feel that warm glow  :D

I think the players should be thinking they can make the Euro spots, they should be ambitious. For myself I thought that we maybe had an outside chance of it at the start of the season and while we've had a bit of a dodgy patch we're still mid table so its not impossible. I'm not expecting us to make it but I'll be delighted if we do obviously, if we get a wee foreign jolly I'll have to start being nice to Mrs Root which would freak both of us out.  :lol2:

Hi Chomp ...... I do agree, that Our Club/ Manager/Team .....and us fans as well, should be ambitious and set our sights high.

No just in the long term. But even in the much shorter term, eg. Even when it comes to playing a team like Celtic for instance.

But I do (weel at least at this moment) could reconcile myself to finishing mid table in the Premieship for anither season or twa.

If I thought it was still part of a long term, ambitious plan, towards achieving an end goal. To be known as a top premiership club.

Europe?  Not being pessimistic or anything but I'm just looking for a victory and 3 points in the next game.

Small steps, small steps

Yeah with one win in seven, Europe is probably the last thing we should be thinking about.

Hearts away, St Johnstone away, Aberdeen at home. All very tough games coming up. I'd be delighted in we can get five points from those three.

I'm not against a more 'practical' show of my love but my preferred option wouldn't be digging the allotment.  :lol2:
