Is Negativity The Scourge Of Forums ...how Would You Describe Yourself ?

Recommended Posts

A Couple o' Things ...... This is no' a reference to posters here. Although we all have our moments :)

Had a quick read o' anither forum, which get's aboot 4 posts a day (on a good day) Guess whit ain ?

Trying to be polite here. Let me put it this way. They were certainly not the kind of posts that inspire.

I am no interested in a range o' definitions o' positivity, negativity, optimism, pesimism, being realistic,

being delusional, living in happy fantasy land (me maist o' the time)  How would you describe yourself ?

I'm old enough to believe, more will get accomplished with a happy positive focused attitude (self & others)

If you're going to be self- critical, dinnae be too hard on yourself !!   If you are thinking o' crticising others,

try and find the right balance :)   And Boba keep up the guid work whatever happens, you are tryng :)

Hmmm...self-reflection is never easy! I'm a bit bi-polar when it comes to our beloved Dees. Win, I'm expecting Barcelona next up - lose, I'm expecting Brechin! Draw and I let out a sigh of relief that we didn't lose and move on. Sobering thought that I've been a Dee fan since a boy, 45 years or so...yet have never seen any really consistent period of success in all that time. Hope the next 45 are better...;)

Why don't you contribute to other forum, instead of having a pop, you did in the past, you are allowed to post on both.

I'm easy going, loyal, but hate sarcasm.

Hello valleyboy ....  Thanks for your response.

I did not specificaly name any forum (although I accept, high detection skills would not be required, to figure where meh finger might be pointing)

To try to respond to your comment, let's assume you are talking about Dundee Mad, which was the only other forum I was an active poster on.

When I decided to move away from that forum, the reasons for doing so (which I explained at the time)  were initially the advertising .... which I

previously blocked ot by adblock.  To be as honest as I can be, on a personal level,I did find some of the critical posts (to my mind) becoming

more insulting. This, I emphasise, is a personal feeling, and I hope it does not come over as me taking the moral high ground. For others, that

may well be part of what a forum is all about. And that's fine. For whatever reason, Dundee Mad became a lot less active. And that, plus having

the adverts (which were driving me really crazy) and some of the tone  used by some of the posters, I decided it was time to move on.

TDB may not be to everyone's taste, but it suited me then. And definitely suits me now. If other forums suit other posters ..eg P&B or DM, then,

you should not be surprised to know, my own view is, live and let live. Each to their own. I have only been a member of two forums (of any kind)

in my entire life ... DM & TDB's. And at this time, as you can probably see by the number and lengths of my posts ....that is plenty for me, and

definitely for others :)  You suggested my post as "sarcastic" & "having a pop" and if you seriously believe that, and it offends you, I apologise.

I thought my comments were of the "very gentlest kind"     Anyway thanks for responding to the question, in describing yourself as "easy going"

That maks twa o' us at least valleyboy  :D

Hi HK' ..... Thanks for responding.

I zoned right into this "bi-polar bit" Because I am certain eh fall into this category. I do seem to go to one extreme to another.

Thankfully you never ken wi' some o my posts, when I'm about to enter meh fantasy world.  I successfully keep it hidden  :lol2:

Surely anybody that supports a fitba team, live and experience each end o' the spectrum, as you suggest in your own post HK.

But it still seems "funny" as DFC Fans and Supporters, that some performances, expectaions start to soar, and awe ye can

envisage is good times ahead. While ither gemmes leave ye near greetin' convinced that's it !! Then new day & new game :)

I never accused you of being sarcastic, but I did think you were having a pop, I came over to this rum, due to certain Arabs seemingly having a free roll on that board, but we should never forget the good work and money raised Mad for our club, there were plenty good people and still are on that site

I dinnae disagree wi' anything in yir post valleyboy.  I take the point you make regarding not accusing me o' being sarcastic.

But I'd happily agree, that at times, I do use a wee bit sarcasm & have the occasional pop. But it really is of the gentle kind.

You raised two points which I should have added in my post. Arabs having a free roll and the good work and money that Mad

and others, raised for DFC.  I certainly would add there were some great posters on there, both new posters, as well as the

more experienced long established members. Withot sounding patronising I agree, there are still some guid posters there.

But for the range of reasons given in other posts, do you not think it is losing (or lost) it's impact ? Less posters/members ?

I would like to see loads o ' busy, active, DFC Forums that would suit  all fans & supporters ....& .withoot the bitterness that

occasionally raises it's ugly heid !!    A bit o banter between forums & fans :)   Personal insults :(  Meh opinion only :)

Using your opening question, negativity is the scourge of forums, we're talking about 2 DFC forums who seem to be um, not exactly getting along due to 'negative waves' between posters on different boards, some of whom use both.

It was some of the more negative aspects that started putting me off P & B, I'm happy to disagree with other posters and I hope to learn from the different views and information that makes its way onto forums but the curse of the internet is the anonymity it provides, it gives some a level of bawbaggery that you have to hope they don't use in their day to day life. The level of pedantry can be tiresome too.

IMO negativity is not the best word to describe the problems with forums. We have had terrific discussions where ideas have been the cause of disagreement and created debate. As I see it, the way that these disagreements are expressed can be the problem. If you don't say why you disagree and try to move the discussion forward you can end up with a basic shouting match where an element of "I'm right, you're wrong" creeps in, and this can degenerate into "banter" rather than the exchange of ideas. Sometimes the banter is really funny but it depends on the comment being interpreted as banter and not as an insult.

Dundee Mad still produces worthwhile comment and if it could control the ads I'm sure it would do better. They had a question and answer session with Colin Reid which was interesting, and they have posters who have a long history of support for the Dee's, but it is different from TDB in that the level of moderation is different. Some people think the moderation on this forum neuters this forum and that a free for all policy is what is required. If you like that style of forum you can post on Dundee Mad.

I think there's merit in both forums and I post on both. Neither is better than the other, they are different and as the French might say Vive la difference!
