Passengers will soon be able to get direct flights between Dundee and Amsterdam.

In March FlyBe launched a bid to introduce daily return flights from Dundee Airport to Schiphol in the Dutch capital.

Today, that was confirmed in George Osborne’s Autumn Statement.

The Chancellor said: “The government is providing £7 million through the Regional Air Connectivity Fund to support new air routes promoting domestic and international connectivity and stimulating jobs and growth, including from Dundee to Amsterdam.â€

The news could be a huge boost the city with the V&A and Waterfront project due for completion in 2018.

An annual report by Highlands and Islands Airports showed passenger numbers at Dundee Airport dropped from 48,312 in 2012/13 to 26,774 last year.

The airport experienced a fall with the withdrawal of services to Belfast and Birmingham and more recently Cityjet services between Dundee and London City were reduced before being withdrawn altogether.

This was replaced with a route connecting Dundee and London Stansted operated by Loganair’s FlyBe franchise, following the granting of special “public service†dispensation and £2.85 million from a UK Government route development fund.
