Help Us To Save The Badge

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Not strictly a Dundee post but I hope you can spare some time to help out my club.

As you may be aware, Ayr United were recently shopped to the Procurator Fiscal to the Court of the Lord Lyon by a rival supporter for sporting a badge that is in breach of heraldic law for having 1) a Saltire within an enclosed shield shape and 2) having lettering within an enclosed shield shape.

The law dates back to the 1600s and is one of those ridiculous old laws that has no place in society any more. If Ayr are found guilty of breaching the law, we could be fined on a daily basis until the badge is completely overhauled. If the club refuse to change the badge then the Lord Lyon has the power to remove all sign of the badge from the stadium as well as confiscating stock from the club shop!

We are running a petition to show the Court of the Lord Lyon that there is no need for clubs like ours to be targeted by ancient, outdated law and that it is not in the public interest to prosecute innocent parties. We are asking Scottish football supporters to back our campaign and help prevent others falling foul of Lord Lyon's rules. As of yesterday, Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson has taken on the mantle and is seeking to raise the matter at Westminster - hopefully other prominent politicians will follow suit soon enough!

If you are thinking "why would I help Ayr United?" I can fully understand, however please be aware that over 20 Scottish clubs could be forced to change their badge unless we can get this law changed. Unfortunately, you guys would fall foul of Lord Lyon's rules, due to the text contained within the centre of the club crest. The cost of registering a 'coat of arms' with the Lord Lyon amounts to £3-4k and that's not to mention the re-branding cost of changing all items of club merchandise to comply. Ridiculous!

Anyway, if you've read this far then hopefully you can take an extra minute to sign our petition.

No to sure why this "nonsense" persists ...... But it seems no' only petty, but pursued by those who feel self-important !!

Guid Luck wi' that Team o' yours :)

My cynical side thinks its more than just self importance Gedee, I think they're being greedy, they're trying to squeeze cash out of football clubs using this arcane 'law' to justify it. I hope it backfires spectacularly and they get all their 'laws' abolished. I can't see a single 'good' reason for them to be pursuing this, only self serving ones.

Closer to home than you think.

The current Lord Lyon King of Arms Joe Morrow, is a former Dundee councillor and a current Vice Lord Lieutenant of Dundee, and Chairman of Dundee Waterfront Development Board.

As the Ayr fan suggested, might just start looking a bit closer to home.
