Rory Loy: Dundee Are Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde Of Premiership

Recommended Posts

Dundee are the Premiership’s equivalent of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, according to top-scorer Rory Loy.

The striker says you just never know which Dark Blues side is going to turn up from one weekend to the next.

The 27-year-old, who has hit seven goals in 11 starts since his summer switch from Championship Falkirk, barely got a kick at the weekend as his side crashed to a 2-0 loss to Aberdeen.

And he admits that, although the Dons were good, a class apart in fact, at times, punters saw the bad side of Dundee.

But he reminds those with a short memory that it was only a few weeks back the Dark Blues were unlucky not to come away from Tynecastle having claimed all three points from top-flight form side Hearts.

“There is some gap between us and Aberdeen — we know that,†said Loy. “But if you rewind the clock back two weeks, we could have won at Tynecastle and Hearts are up there challenging Aberdeen. It is swings and roundabouts for us at the moment.

“The two performances against Hearts and Aberdeen just about sum up our season so far. Our consistency is something we haven’t been able to get to grips with. We look like one team one week then the next we look totally different. Unfortunately, it was the latter last weekend.â€

As poor as his side were last time out, much like the character in Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel, Loy is hoping Dundee can channel their inner Henry Jekyll and zone out the Edward Hyde at Motherwell this weekend.

“We have two games coming up that are massive for us,†he said. “We have to aim to take at least a win from one of them. Any team that hasn’t won a game in so long isn’t going to be a fan of that statistic. In the same breath we have not had a loss in that time. But picking up draws isn’t really good enough, a win and loss is better than two draws as we all know.

“We need to end the little run we are on.â€

Reflecting on last weekend’s encounter, Loy admits Derek McInnes’ Dons gave the Dark Blues a footballing lesson.

“It was massively disappointing — Aberdeen gave us a bit of a lesson,†he said. “We really can’t complain with the result in the end, it was probably kind to us.It must have looked like there was a gulf between the sides on the TV. It certainly felt like it on the pitch, too. If I could put my finger on why we are like that, I would be managing the side. I have no idea why we are the way we are.â€

The result was no fair reflection on the side’s talents, in particular those of Loy, who has been one of the brightest sparks of Dundee’s season to date.

“My job the whole day, as a striker, was to defend from the front,†said Loy. “We had absolutely no chance to make any impact on their goal. Apart from one turn and shot in the box, which was blocked, I had nothing of note anywhere near their goal. We had scraps to feed off but those scraps were falling 10 or 20 yards outside their box.

“It was a tough, tough day to be a striker.â€
