Out Of Contract Players

Recommended Posts

Just noticed that Liam Kennedy has drafted up a list of who is out of contract at end of season:

Kevin Thomson: I'm torn whether I want PH to offer him a new contract or not. Make no mistake, we're a much better team when he plays, and he's by far our best midfielder IMO. But his injury record is poor and he'll be on a decent wedge I'd imagine. I've a gut feeling that PH will offer him another deal, even if it means we only get 50% of games out of him max.

Gowser: I like him a lot. Heidcase off the park, but a born winner, and absolute grafter on it. Every team needs a player like him, although he needs a more creative player alongside to compliment his attributes. I'd like to see him stay.

GGH: Genius when he's on his game, but struggles with fitness when he's not playing regularly. I think PH will let him go tbh.

McGinn: Should defo be offered a new deal IMO.

Konrad: Worth another deal.

Irvine: Let him go. Bring Kerr back into the fold.

Kerr: Worth a new deal, bring him back to replace Irvine IMO.

Gadzhalov: Haven't seen much of the guy to be honest, so nae idea. We could probably get a better replacement if he were to go. Maybe Priest could come into the squad?

Ben Priest: Again, don't think he's played for the first team, so cant really comment as haven't watched the development league games. Could maybe get more involvement if Gadz was to leave.

What's everyone else's thoughts?

KT: If he can prove his fitness in the coming months then give him a new deal.

Gowser: If he stays out of trouble off the park then keep.

GGH: If he shows what he's capable of over the rest of the season then I'd consider an extension.

McGinn: Keep.

Konrad: Let him go.

Irvine: Let him go.

Kerr: Keep.

Gadz: Let him go.

Priest: Haven't seen him play so not sure.

I`D KEEP
Mcginn - should be looking at getting him a new deal ASAP

Kerr - cheap, used as back up pushing for 1st team.

Konrad - hmmm will see nearer end of season , my intial gut instinc is to keep tho not as 1st team starter.

Thats it for me im afraid, the rest should go.

A new midfield is required for next season, in a champ manager world i cant think of 1 midfielder id want to keep other than Dylan and possibly Curran - depending how he`s doing development wise.
Calder - but its difficult to fully judge giving that he`s out the team alot.

No idea about Priest.

Those in contract id want out are Ross,Mcpake,Low - not good enough for DFC
Mcpake gives his all but far to reckless and next season is another season.

SQUAD FOR NEXT SEASON

Bain
Mitchell - imo  number 2 should be cheap as can and doesnt have to be good but i can see both sides of argument.

Kerr
Konrad - possibly
Jules
Holt - still rekon he should be giving more of a chance in a better suited formation , wouldnt be an awfull back up if we need a new LBK
Meggatt - what do you reckon guys ?

Dylan
Curran - if he is developing well
Wighton

Strikers - i`ll reserve judgement just now

Think he's forgotten Andy Black. Change my mind so much on these things.

I think we need to properly invest in two defensive midfielders (with one of them ideally a bit more versatile and able to play further back if need be), 2 centre backs and two players with pace who have the ability to play in a wide role. Without that, I don't see us progressing to the next level.

We have Calder and Healey (well technically he's still here but I don't know if we're still paying) on loan now so their wages are free. I'd expect them to be pretty cheap though and with the young guys we have on loan, I would guess we'd be saving nothing there.

McGinn is the one I'd be sure about but the others can really go either way. It pains me to say it but my instinct is that Thomson, Harkins, McGowan, Irvine, Konrad and Gadzhalov will all end up going. None of them are necessarily bad players and they all offer something but unless we move players on elsewhere somehow (Stewart leaving would motivate me to keep Harkins for another year though if he finishes the season well).

It'll be interesting to see if Hartley takes a gamble and goes for changes this summer. It's probably going to be the hardest transfer window of Hartley's reign in the sense that it will put so much pressure on him. It'll come down to seeing how the young guys develop this season (Low, Ross, Julen, Holt and Hemmings) and judging how much better they can be in another sort of side.

Just a lazy thought but from the out of contract players:

-Stewart,Thomson, Harkins, McGowan, Irvine, Konrad and Gadzhalov

+Osman, Draper, Frans, Anderson, Swanson and Lawless

Bain
McGinn Frans Julen Holt
Ross Draper Osman Lawless
Loy Hemmings

Mitchell (GK), Meggatt (LB), Kerr (RB), McPake (CB),  Anderson (CB), Swanson (RM), Low (CM), Wighton (ST), Carreiro (AM), Curran (CM), Allan (CB), Black(RB/RM/CM).

Not meaning to suggest that we should sign any of those (although I wouldn't be too outraged, I doubt we could pull it off given that we'd not be able to guarantee starting places to everyone), it shows a squad which even without our best player, would be way more balanced and capable of handling tougher opponents. Just seeing Draper and Osman in (or two natural midfielders who can physically challenge) would make our team seem way more effective and take the pressure off Low and Ross from struggling defensively.

We're not that far away from a pretty good side.

Are any of these guys free agents any time soon Harry?

Yeah, forgot to link to this which shows out of contract players this summer.

Think this summer should be used to target more established players. We've had a couple of summers signing mostly young guys and think now is the time to make a few established signings.
