Worst Mistake By Dfc

Recommended Posts

Some comments on Gary Irvine topic about worst mistake made by our club. Maybe worthy of its own topic?

In terms of football impact I'd say the "decision" not to give glum Jim the manager gig.

The reason I've chosen that is the double whammy effect - the loss of a potentialy talented manager for us AND the fact that he built a dynasty over there that we are only just beginning to see crumble after what, 45 or so years?

Such has been the state if our club in the more recent past there must be a fair few bad decisions to choose from though 😢

Without doubt The McLean decision! Was unbelievable seeing our demise in the 70's and the rise of that small outfit AT THE SAME TIME and to make matters even worse win their 1st (2nd and 3rd) major honour/honours on our ground ...twice against us!

And they wonder why supporters my age dislike them so much!!

Makes the Gordon Strachan decision look small fry in comparison!!

That's a bit dramatic there golden years were late 70s to late 80s.

For the majority of the last 25 years they have did ok and usually better than us.

They have won 2 cups in the last 30+ years. 2 more than us admittedly but they have more than seen there fair share of dross anxiety heartache in the late McLean years, relegation under Golac and Kirkwood. Sturrock Hegarty Mccall Brewster Smith and co have made roaring erses of it taking them from a club that has had a nest egg to sailing close to financial ruin.

Don't let them fool you thst they have had a dynasty. It was long gone decades before this season

Ken, lets not forget how mind numbingly pish they were a decade ago.

ET got lucky with his last throw of the dice when Avril came in and mopped up abodys mess. Prior to that they were in a bad way and self proclaimed United fan Eddie was close to chucking it.

Back to their rightful place now.

The Arabs only spent one season in Div 1 - we have spent at least 12 plus since the PL began. Thats a killer and when combined with the Marrs/Bonetti fiasco is why we are financially still years behind.

We need a few years in the SPL to build and grow, use TV money wisely and progress with team and stadium (needs looked at soon)

Despite the Arabs lego stadium they developed it to standards on all four sides as well as building teams and winning two cups - oh and they reached a European Final!

Stability and continuity with succession planning is what DFC need now.

BCG without doubt I am aware of our ups and downs in my lifetime. The pint I am making is one that many Arabs try to invent...that they have had a glory 45 year period.

Without doubt they have had 2 cracking weekends in 94 and 2010 but to let them think they have been on some Real Madrid Manchester United glory period could not be further from truth.

As said above outwith the Leven period where he turned them round from yearly relegation scappers to top 6 regulars they have been mediocre with not much to get excited about is the point I am making

I'm no Arab...trust me on that. But it would take a seriously tinted pair of blue specs to deny what a job McLean did for them. And I agree it has not all been upwards and onwards for United over the past 45 years or so but I'd certainly say that he built not just a team but a club with a philosophy during his time, hence my use of the word dynasty.

And by failing to take a chance on him - accepted he might not have been considered ready for us at the time and that hindsight is a great gift - we unknowingly played a big part in United's rise and our demise over that 45 year period.

I'm delighted to see the natural order of things being restored.

It's staggering incompetence to allow a club with prominence and a great history in the city, decline to a point where we do not own our stadium.

Responsibility for this lies with many people, starting in the Gellatly period through to the fans ownership era.

Despite this our fans showed that their love for the club was unmatched.

Our promotion on the last day against Dumbarton showed what a great fan base we still have in the City, with good management and success on the field we could once again be the number one club in Dundee.
