Not saying it was a red but I've seen red cards given for that kind of challenge. Whether you get the ball doesn't matter if the ref considers it reckless.

Refs don't get the benefit of the 20 camera angles/freeze frame and have to make the decision in a second, they call it and then have to live with the decision. They're never going to get it right all the time.

i know what your saying cobra but in my mind no way was mcpake challenge a foul , refs these days dont let things like that go tho, tackling is becoming a thing of the past im afraid

I definitely see where you're coming from, but surely given that he won the ball and McPake is the one that's now in hospital you could argue that if anyone was reckless it was Rankin for the follow-through?

What is reckless about winning the ball ( fairly) in a more commited manner than your opponent? The Ref gave a free kick, yet decided it was a fair tackle. Says all you need to know about the standard of referees in Scotland IMO.

Referees nowadays are told to give a free-kick for a careless challenge, a yellow card for a reckless challenge and a straight red for excessive force. Whether you play the ball doesn't matter.

I think most refs would give a yellow for McPake's tackle. Some might give a red. I'm not saying I agree with the rules. I'm just saying that's how the officials are told to respond to meaty challenges nowadays.

Personally, I think he's played the ball and it should be fine but the reality is that challenge is no longer considered acceptable.
