Five Things Dundee Fans Learned From Derby Win

Recommended Posts

Dundee claimed the City of Discovery bragging rights by recording just their second win over rivals Dundee United in more than a decade.

Despite the obvious three points of course, what can the Dark Blues take from the performance? Here’s a few of football writer Liam Kennedy’s thoughts from the clash.

HEMMINGS LOOKS THE REAL DEAL

Kane Hemmings has had his fair share of critics this season.

In fact, probably the harshest critic of all has been the player himself.

But week by week he seems to be winning the fans over not by his goals, they have always been there, but by his performances.

Asked to do a thankless task up front, almost alone, Hemmings held the ball up expertly. Absolutely everything stuck.

As a result he was able to bring others into the game, like Gary Harkins and Paul McGowan.

Able to play back to goal, be lethal in front of it as well as run in behind he is showing signs of growing into the complete striker.

KONRAD STEPS UP TO THE PLATE

All too often Thomas Konrad has been the villain on derby day. On Saturday he was outstanding.

Many a backline would crumple after the early loss of a player and leader of James McPake’s quality but the Dark Blues did not.

And, for me, a lot of that was to do with the performance of Konrad.

They will need him more than ever now, with bodies light at the heart of defence.

STICK WITH HARKINS

One week he’s a world beater the next he’s non-existent.

It’s a much said cliché but you just never know what you’re going to get from Glorious Gary.

The derby was not one of his better days.

But Paul Hartley has found a position where Harkins can make an impact. I’d like to see the gaffer stick with him for a decent run of games and maybe then we will see what we all know he is really capable of.

HOPE FOR KERR YET

‘He’s one of our own’ Cammy Kerr looked all set to be headed out the Dundee exit door this season.

Despite a promising summer, ample cover in the full-back areas meant he was again farmed out on loan to Peterhead, where he enjoyed such a successful spell last season.

Not many believed he would be back to make an impact, but cometh the hour of need, cometh the man.

Few players on the park on Saturday will have covered more yards. Surprise inclusion Kerr gave the Dark Blues the energy and drive they needed with the absence of star man Greg Stewart.

Kerr is out of contract in the summer and desperate for a new deal.

Who knows, an extended stay might work out for all parties.

DEE MUST PRODUCE IN JANUARY WINDOW

With McPake looking like not only missing all of this season, as well as a hefty chunk of next, the pressure is on manager Paul Hartley to pull another rabbit out of the hat this month.

The least he needs is a centre half. He could probably also do with another attacking option, with the rarely seen Riccardo Calder headed back down south to Aston Villa.

Let’s hope the board are brave and back their man in the winter window.
