Interesting article and graphs for Scotlands major clubs

"Dundee's figures are arguably the most stark reminder of the difference between life in the top flight and life in the second tier. For the years they were an SPL/Premiership side, there is huge increases in their crowds.

While matches against Rangers and Celtic have contributed to that, Dundee also have a city derby match which significantly impacts their crowds. While it is still early in the season, the club are also enjoying their highest average crowd since the 1980s".

Those graphs make for interesting reading. Killie's support has collapsed from 11,500 down to 4,200 in 15 years while Motherwell have gone from 8,500 to 4,000 in the same period. Only the Dee are enjoying a 20-year high. Amazing that we're currently getting the same crowds as when we had Caniggia.

They don't tell the full story though. Whilst Killie's support like many others has undoubtedly fell away over the past decade, away supports have a massive influence on a final figure. The Old Firm used to fill behind both goals at Killie which holds 8,000, 4 times a season. Now they only get Celtic and as little with as 3,000 to 4,000 of them visiting as both the Old Firm's away support like most in the country have fell away in the last decade also.

We only get 3,500 to 4,000 Old Firm, Aberdeen and United fans at Dens every fixture since the redevelopment of Dens.

United got 5,500 Old Firm fans, Dundee fans (quite a few times) and Aberdeen fans (sometimes) too visiting Tannadice in the same period so their away end holding 1500 more than ours for the big games obviously has a massive influence on the final average figure.

Our home support is as healthy as it's been since the 80s though. 5,300 to 7,500 Dundee fans at every league fixture at Dens so far this season excluding away supports.

Long may it continue.

I am very encouraged by our crowds, wish I could be there! Of course success brings in better crowds, look at the highs and lows for the old firm. We need to stay in this league and build towards being a constant top 6 team, with occasional silverware (Yes I was there in 1973, and as a wee kid in 1962).  We have to believe that we can get back to being a top club and in European competition most years. I am optimistic, but having been a supporter for 50+ years and from a family of DEEs, I think we are due a break for once!! The team are certainly working towards that goal.

As you say Cobra , a twenty year high for the Dee's this season. after all we have been through in the last twenty years it's incredible to have achieved that so far this season! I was reading with interest the Barry Hearn thread and wondering if there will be a "revolution" in the way the game in Scotland is marketed. I do believe that we and many other clubs could still significantly increase our attendances further if we provide a brilliant customer experience. his comments about living in the shadow of the EPL are bang on for me - we can't compete in terms of population and cash (frankly I wouldn't want to anyway), so we need to differentiate ourselves from the rest by offering a unique experience... Summer football, bold sponsorship, sensible league / trophy re-organisation, innovative TV deals and improved facilities would make a huge difference.

You've put forward some good options but I'm not sure how much more 'bums on seats' are there in the Scottish market. For one off games like the final game of last season or a trip to Hampden you'll always see an increase but when the club have lowered prices for a game the extra numbers aren't enough to justify doing this on a regular basis. As we saw on the thread about the Cup game against Aberdeen, I think a big problem for people is the kiddy prices, we should be looking at a token quid or even better, free entry to get the under 16's in, or free to the age of 12 then a few quid until 16/18 (if at school).

I'd like to see changes to the Scottish game and if they don't work we can change them back, as long as its not costing the clubs money to experiment with improvements then as a game we should be open to the idea of trying to make the whole thing better and hopefully more profitable. I think it will require regime change at the SFA/SPFL for much movement though.  :(

Interesting article.

I couldn't help but notice this though...

"Rangers, Hearts and Hibernian, who have generally provided sizeable travelling supporters"

No guarantees in football, but if Dundee FC, can remain in the Premiership, continue to show intent and develop ambitious plans, employ the best players, manager, coaching staff, we can afford within our budget, I believe attendances will rise.

Although, for many supporters, there is simply not a great deal of money going round, and as long as this continues to be the case, the choices of what a family can do with the little extra money they may have becomes very limited..

Chomp touches on the prices for children. I do not know the price for children and families attending games at Dens. But (imo) children are the future life blood of our club, and they should be doing every thing possible to get children and families into every home games (free if possible)

Many dad and mums are struggling to make ends meet and possibly the time and money is not there to spend as much time with their families.

Taking the family to a game, knowing the chidren are getting in free, is an ideal time for the family to do things together Not only to build the bond within the family, but to build the bond between supporters, families, and the fans of the future, the children       We are a family/community club and all that ?

In Dundee there is a choice for supporters to go watch Dundee FC or "the ither ains"     All of us on here know exactly what team we should be watching, but newcomers to the city and bairns growing up, will be influenced by what they see and hear ......epecially bairns,

I think. If dad or/and mum can afford to take the bairns to Dens every other week, there will never be an argument as to what club is for them.  (I hope DFC are not losing an opportunity here)

Similiarly, looking at huge empty places in the terracing, does no one any good (club or supporters)    There should someone at the club doing something about it !!   Surely a bit of public relations (publicity) around schools, businesses, organisations, clubs, pubs, with a bunch of free/discounted tickets would  be a start.

Of course all this mght already be going on (others can tell me)........if not, well it might be something to dicuss here, or think about.

It's sad, but many kids these days growing up in this city will grow up supporting Rangers or Celtic. I remember going to school with a wash of green and light blue scarf's around peoples necks and by kids born and bred in this fair city. I don't have time for any Dundonian that supports either of these teams. I have more respect for the Arabs, even though they disrespect their fathers and grandfather who were Dee's. ;)

Scottish and English media wont see past these two clubs, unless they're not in a cup or an other special event, and even then the media still happen to talk about these clubs for 80% of the time that the event is covered on TV or the Radio. Another factor is the steadily rising prices that a once working man's game has now been turned into a middle class game. The price for kids and families these days will turn off parents forking out the money to get to a game. Would rather have bums on seats, than kids walking the streets (Or playing MMo's/RPGs all day).
