Scottish Cup Semi From 1973

Just came across this footage of Dundee v Celtic at Hampden.

Strange to think we were more competitive against Celtic when they had world class players like McNeil, McGrain, Johnstone and Dalglish than we are nowadays.

Our keeper Thomson Allan looks top class. Haven't seen him in action before.

I remember it well. We always seemed to draw Celtic in the semis back them.

In my mind Thomson Allen was the best keeper in the country bar none. He wasn't the tallest but he was absolutely brilliant.

Hard to believe that he only ever got 2 caps in his career. If he had played for Celtic or Rangers he would have been Scotland's number keeper. I still can't believe that Allan Rough managed to keep him away from more caps.

Good to see Dundee in their plain but classy away strip( A bit surprising given the opposition) Amazing to think that within 2 years we were relegated!! A relegation that changed everything and from which we are still recovering from to this day!! ;o(

Wouldnt mind this one as a Retro Top by the way but get the badge right!!!!!! ;oD

That was our home strip that season.

I was at both games, and enjoyed seeing the footage, though it wasn't much of a game. Ian Scott definitely had a shot tipped over the bar at the Celtic end but that was maybe in the Wed night replay.

We lost SEVEN times to Celtic in the Scottish Cup in the 70s, and the one time Celtic got knocked out early, by Motherwell 3-2, we lost at home to Falkirk. Our other defeats in the 70s were by Rangers and Hibs.

Have to go and lie down now.

I was at both games too. Watched from the South Stand surrounded by hordes of Dundee fans although the main bulk of the support were in the North enclosure. I'm sure the Ian Scott tip over was in the replay but we didn't do enough in either game to get through. As blue boy says the white kit was our home strip that season and I remember me any mates all loved it. Thomson Allan was my hero then, if he'd been 2 or 3 inches bigger I'm sure he would have added to the 2 caps he won. We had some great cup runs in the 70s and I used to love watching the wee laddie that run on the pitch before many of the games to present Thomson Allan with a cardboard cut out of the cup covered in silver paper. Allan then put it in the net for good luck. Favourite away days were Pittodrie, Easter Road, Tynecastle and for some reason Links Park where the crowd was so big I was sitting on the track for a period of the game. Gutted to have missed the 3-0 rout of Rangers at Ibrox though.

Laddie who presented the cardboard cut-out was a young lad from Carnoustie (whose name I remember but don't want to post in case he doesn't want it known) from a good Dee family. I remember seeing it at the time and thinking "this is what football is all about". How little did I know that football would turn into the sanitised, contrived shyte we see today ? Only consolation is that I still sit with my old man (83) and my laddie (19) - and hope that my young lad will see some success ! It's no' been easy being a Dee over the last 48 Years !!! DTID

Re the strip; I'm sure my mum bought me a standard white football top and the badge was a separate item as I tried to sew it on myself, and failed, mum to the rescue, there was also a red dfc badge at some point. Great times and if only we could have got past Celtic we'd have had a couple more cups.
