Neville At Valencia

Recommended Posts

Following last night's 7-0 defeat to Barcelona and no wins in 8 league games since his appointment as Valencia's new manager, is there a grain of truth in Hartley's comments along the lines of football pundits who have not managed don't know what they are talking about? It is all very well to sit in the studio watching the game from four angles and in slow mo but how would they get on in choosing the right players and the right tactics for a game?

Neville is on a hiding to nothing. It's his first job in management in a league he has no experience of and can't even speak the language. He's at a big club with high expectations but doesn't have a good enough squad while his best players keep getting injured. Valencia have had 15 managers in 15 years so it's not as if there is any prospect of him being given time. The sooner he's put out of his misery the better.

can't even speak the language.

On this point actually, it seems remarkable at how much Spanish that he's been speaking in a very short time there. Seems to be trying very hard to communicate with his players in the language.

Quite like Neville and think he'll make a decent management career for himself but agree that he's on a hiding to nothing with this task. Will be a good learning curve for him anyway.

The worst thing is that who comes in there next year will be onto a good thing with the redistribution of the tv money starting at the beginning of next season. You might get some surprises from the smaller clubs like malaga etc as well because the extra budget will make a huge difference. For Valencia themselves they might actually get one sound footing again after years of financial suicide.

He's a smart guy and making good progress with the language. I'd like to think he'd get the summer to build his own team but in the modern day where you are judged week to week, there's not much chance of that. Former players and the media are already trying to hound him out of a job.

It's hard to believe Fergie was given three years to get things right. Nowadays you have to deliver within three months.
