Scottish Cup Semi From 1987

Who remembers being at Tynecastle for this one?

I look back at this as the time we should maybe have won the cup. We had some fantastic players back then.

Our performance was excellent. We came back from an early setback to lead at half-time through Coyne and Wright but it wasn't to be. Bomber slipped in the mud for their equaliser. Wright was clean through on goal but cynically pulled down by Narey (in the days before last man red cards) and then Bomber's brilliant free-kick was somehow kept out by Thompson, so it was United in the final and St Mirren's name on the cup.

Watching this you realise you how good Rafferty was. He's one player I think is maybe under-appreciated.

Great support from Dundee fans that day as well and it was a real battle on the park. The game was so much more physical and direct back then.

I drove up yo the Semi from a holiday in Wales. Met the family who came from Dindee and recall the real sadness that we were beaten. We would /should have beaten St Mirren on the final. football was more physical back then and to me a bit more exciting. I recall a few times shouting at defenders put him in the stand, meaning a hard tackle. Tackling has all but gone out of the game and has lessened it as a spectacle with all the square passes and players falling over at the slightest touch. In these heady days tackles were made and players got overc it.

must say I was never a fan of Rafferty, when he as good he was good but when he was bad.......

Thanks for the memories though.

Remember the game like it was yesterday...what an atmosphere at half-time with us 2-1 up.

And the morgue-like atmosphere on the bus coming back. And to discover St Mirren had beaten Hearts just made it all the worse, feeling that we could have been amongst the very select group of Dees to see the cup being lifted, if only...

The consolation of watching Ferguson score in the final to break United's hearts again was great but...

First time I have watched that since the day I was there. Most euphoric and full of hope I had been to that point, but oh what a comedown! One of the best teams I have seen though in my life as a Dundee fan. 1 good full back, 1 great centre half, 2 great central mids, a great strike force and Rab Shannon. ;)

I was just a young lad at the time and remembering my dad driving along the kingsway and there was a massive Dundee banner being held up across from Cairdie. Fantastic Dundee following that day.

From what I remember of the game we were superb 1st half but didn't turn up 2nd half. Billy Thomson had 2 fantastic saves late on from identical Bomber free kicks that looked like they were heading in both times. I'm sure my dad said it was like we came out 2nd half just to hold onto what we had.

As a side note my big sister was 1 of these kiddy on dabs you get. She was away shopping with my mum whilst we were at the game. Clearly recall she was telt to shut it when we got back to the car, proper raging I was. Think I issued her a death threat that day :)

Zero time for dabs whether they're fake ains or family members. Cunts the lot of thum.

Living in Edinburgh we had a joint Dee/Dab party at the Nova Hotel in Bruntsfield with a full house. Played the Hector Nicoll A and B sides all night and a brilliant atmosphere from both fans/mates - would this happen with any other derby teams?

In the morning I walked round to the hotel to visit mates staying there and as I approached all I could see was a huge DFC banner hanging out an upstairs bedroom window overlooking the links - shame aboot the score tho!

14,000 at game with early KO and one lane on Forth Rd Bridge - under normal conditions crowd would have been bigger.

To say we didn't turn up for second half is wrong. At halftime that master thugtician Jim McLean told his players to nail Rafferty and they duly did so early on.Rafferty had been running the show with John Brown first half .Just in front of the dugouts his so-called players duly obliged twice ,in a display of cynical violence which shook every bone in Rafferts body. How he played on is a testament to the man.Even despite that there were 2 cracking JB freekicks only 1 is shown in the footage which might have saved our day but it was not to be
