Tv Money

Neil Doncaster is waxing lyrical about the new International TV deal.

Figures of £14 million have been mentioned, I'm not sure if it's a year or over several years, these things never seem very clear when Doncaster is involved.

I wonder how much TV money is now available for our clubs once this latest deal comes into play?

Quote in paper is " The Ladbrokes Premiership will now be shown in 102 countries all over the planet - with clubs set to bank more than £10m over the next six years. "

Not clearly worded but suggests total for 6 years is £10 m+, not £10m per year. Doesn't seem a great amount for 102 countries yet they're claiming to be masters of negotiation to pull off a "Blockbuster" of a deal. Wonder what their total salary will be for the next 6 years?

Needs improved after current deal runs out based on over 100 countries - again its actual viewing figs that count when it comes to selling advertising

Agree with this about the actual viewing figures. It must be very difficult to argue that the people who buy sports TV packages do so on the basis of the Scottish football offering. I think the smaller clubs should try to get back their media rights and see if they couldn't build up a bisiness plan based on something like DeeTV package.

To be fair, Setanta did quite well with just Scottish football. It was when they ventured into the overpriced English Premier things went wrong.

Don't remember the details and I'm happy to accept that Setanta did quite well with Scottish football. Might be interesting to see why they felt they needed to go for EPL games.

If the new deal is £10m over 6 years that's £1.67m per year. If you break that down into a monthly charge, say £10 per month or £120 per year you need less than 14000 subscribers. That doesn't seem an impossible figure to reach, and that's why I feel it might be better to do something different.

The news out today isn't a new deal. It's simply a report highlighting that the current deals in place mean Scottish football is shown in 103 countries around the planet. Doncaster and co. are claiming this to be good news but all it shows is how sh**e the financial sums involved in the current deals are.

Scottish football just isn't attractive to a global audience. In fact, outside of the superbly marketed EPL there aren't that many leagues which are.

It's certainly worth looking at other options and, based on your numbers, a 'self-developed' product doesn't seem unrealistically optimistic - only 14,000 subscribers to match current revenue!

TV revenue is critical due to the finances in Scottish football, i assume (foolishly perhaps) that Doncaster and co. got the best deal they could so that's what the market values us at- if we want more we do need to do something different as BCram says.

Scottish football viewing figures on BT/Sky are up 24k (15% or so) per showing, year-on-year.

Our old TV deal was £2M P/A, and this new one is £1.67M P/A internationally.  Fans and clubs are being taken for a ride, yet they seem to be OK with it, and I really don't know why, especially when Doncaster and co are given their jobs by the SPFL board, compromised of Chairmen/Directors of the clubs.

Same with the domestic TV deal, once inflation is calculated, we will be looking at an increase of <£750k P/A by the end of the new deal in 2020 in real terms.  That's just a 4% increase, when we are seeing viewership figures increasing by 4 times that.

£ per view, Sky and BT are getting their moneys worth from us, very much so.
