Foreign Languages

Anyone on here speak a foreign language fluently? Or even just a bit?

I am fluent in Spanish as I studied that in university, and spent time in Spain as part of that.

I know a bit of Japanese as I took that in first year of Uni (struggled a lot with it to begin with, but it was enjoyable, I later went back and tried to learn some more)

Know basic Gaelic, and very little French (from school)

I quite enjoy learning languages in my spare time, would quite like to try another one some time

EDIT : I am also fluent in talking pish sometimes.

As a kid living in New Zealand I learned a bit of Maori, we had a Maori teacher who was very keen to pass it on but that was a wee while ago.

I always made a point of learning the basics wherever I was in the world, "please", "thank you", "how much ?" "Which way to the red light district" "dos cerveza por favor" etc. I'm a sophisticated man of the world dontcha know.  B)

Did Spanish and French many moons ago and had a go at Cantonese when i lived in Hong Kong but gave it up as a lost cause - way too hard pronunciation with 9 tones!

It's a blessing we talk the global language but it does take away a bit of the incentive to learn another language so fair play to anybody who sticks in and does it.

Also did 10 years of teaching English language, mainly to Chinese, Korean and Japanese students.

Spent time learning all those phrases for going to Prague last year and seemed to be going quite well with people appreciating the effort and even some moments where they thought I was a fluent speaker.

Half way through the trip, my skills seemed to have vanished and people weren't responding anymore. Turns out I didn't consider that a train to Budapest meant a change in language! It was literally four days of trying to speak Czech to Hungarians and it only clicked on the trip to the airport on the way home.
