It appears he didn't need to sign anything, seems it was an "automatic" extension triggered by playing a number of games specified in his current contract. Courier website quotes Hartley as being delighted, and mentioning that Harkins is very happy at Dens. 

It crossed my mind that this might have been a factor in Harkins dropping out of the team for a number of games earlier this winter, if Hartley had been considering offloading him in the window.

I'm pleased to see him stay, and hope he continues his current form....I think Hemmings & whoever else plays up front can benefit from Harkins vision & passing.
