Davie Cooper

Recommended Posts

I heard on radio Scotland, he would have been 60 today,

A question I'd ask, and I'm not looking to be controversial, was he as good as they make out ?

Three clubs, Clydebank , Rangers and Motherwell, no big clubs from England or Europe there,

Also only 22 caps for Scotland

I don't argue that he had some great ability at times, but the way some of them talk about him, you'd think he should have played for. Real Madrid or inter Milan

I was just a young laddie at the time but thought he was very good. For some reason it's stuck in my mind that we played Rangers at Dens one year on his birthday and there was a load of banners in their end saying happy birthday Super Cooper. Happened to have a couple of days work in Glasgow days after he died. I went past Ibrox to see their memorial for him. Incredible amount of flowers, wreaths, strips and scarves laid out for him by supporters of both sides of the bigot brothers.

Fair to say they idolised him. As a player he went by people for fun and had a great set piece as well.

Baffled why he only had 20 odd caps to be honest, mind you there's probably a lot more international games per season now than back in the late 70s early 80s. Fair to say he'd be the best player in today's national side.

Davie cooper really was THAT good but was up against John Robertson who was possibly even better as an all round player and a double European cup winner at Forest. By todays standards he probably got less caps than he should have too although they got 50 between the two of them.

Robertson was probably more of a team man and a bit more combative all over the pitch. Cooper is one of the most gifted players but what you saw on sportscene was all you got. It was brilliant but he didn't do the tracking back and donkey work robertson did. He didn't have to as if a full back was stupid enough to leave him to gallop upfield *** help them on thd break.

I was having a rant on here the other week about lack of skill in football. Same game, same sized ball, same number of men on the pitch but less skill. The list of players like hansen, cooper, robertson, sharpe, andy gray, eric black, bobby kerr, ray houghton etc that played at the highest level of world football and won european trophys, fa cups, english leagues etc yet won a handful or no caps is reduiculous and there is no excuse for the dross we produce now. No excuses for a lack of skill. You don't need money just hard work!!!
