I'll tell you what, he has taken some stick over the last 18 months or so but since switching to left back he has come up with much improved performances and has become one of our most consistent players. Much deserved MOTM today.  One thing you have to say about the bloke, he never seems to give and (from what I have seen) always gives 100%.

No world beater by any means but credit where it is due.

Gary has made this position his own, Willie Dyer will find out hard to get it back.

He is playing well, however being on the wrong side does expose his limitations.

He is normally facing infield which leaves him blindsided at times and he has to keep switching the ball to his better foot to pass and cross.

Agree totally with you post Attilio ....... without going over the top, your assessment (imo) is bang on the mark.

Two years ago, to be honest, I had little time for him. Now I am expecting a strong, steady performance from him and more recently, that is what we get.

I've always thought some of the stick Irvine got was over the top. He could have a solid game and then misplace a few passes in the last minute and get booed rotten.

Irvine has hardly put a foot wrong this season. A remarkable recovery from the lad after all the stick he took over the previous 2 seasons.

Maybe playing leftback has helped as he keeps it simple and knows he has to concentrate 100% for the whole game? Whatever it is he's been one of our best players each week.

Funnily enough, I was talking about this yesterday and I wondered if because he's playing out of position that mentally he might have taken the pressure off himself by thinking that he 'had an excuse' if it went wrong so his head was in a better place. Total guess work on my part, just a pet theory.
