Cammy Kerr: Celtic Don’T Frighten Us

Recommended Posts

Dundee youngster Cammy Kerr insists the Dark Blues have no fear ahead of tonight’s visit of champions-elect Celtic as they aim to seal a top-six place for the second-year running.

The 20-year-old fans’ favourite has become an integral part of the team since an impressive performance in the last meeting between Dundee and the Bhoys at the start of March with his boundless energy and relentless running up and down the right flank.

But the unassuming Dundee lad isn’t counting any chickens just yet despite starting four of the last five games — coming off the bench in the other, the 4-0 drubbing at Ibrox.

He said: “When the manager tells me I’m playing, I just try to do a job for the team and that’s all I look forward to.

“If I play, I play. If I don’t, I just keep working away in training and see where it takes me.â€

And, when asked about the Dens faithful singing ‘He’s one of our own’ to him, Cammy responds: “Yeah, I enjoy it. I don’t really expect it but it’s all right,†he says with a sly grin.

Kerr’s driving runs down the right wing have become a big part of the way Dundee have played over the past few weeks and the wing-back role in the 3-5-2 formation he’s been used in recently suits him down to the ground.

He added: “Wing-back gives me licence to get up and down all day and I think that’s what one of my best traits is — buzzing about, getting in people’s faces, up and down the pitch so, yeah, I enjoy it.â€

The start of Cammy’s recent spell in the team was the very creditable 0-0 draw against tonight’s opponents last month in Glasgow.

The 3-5-2 system played its role at Parkhead and Kerr feels the same again is required if they are to get a result.

He said: “The game plan that night worked perfectly and in recent weeks it’s worked and sometimes it’s not.

“I think it’s definitely there to be worked at again tonight and we’ll see where it takes us.

“No disrespect to them but I don’t believe they are like the old Celtic teams of five or 10 years ago but they’re still a good side.

“We went to Parkhead before and we could have won it, so I think we can get something, especially them coming to Dens.

“It was a good result for Celtic on Saturday but we’re off the back of a really good result ourselves.

“We’ll go in full of confidence.â€

That good result was a fine 5-2 victory over top-six rivals Ross County that saw the Dens men move above the Staggies as the split approaches.

Cammy continued: “We had to win that one.

“The manager said before the game we had to go and get the three points and we went out and got the result which can only put us in good stead this week.

“In the first half it was a bit sticky, every time we went two goals ahead, we thought ‘right, here we go, we’ve got a wee lead’ and then credit to Ross County they came back twice.

“They made it hard for us but the second half was a lot better and more like us.â€

The victory on Saturday has made Dundee hot favourites to take sixth spot ahead of County.

The Dark Blues sit above the Highland side on goal difference, needing three points from tonight’s game against Celtic and Saturday’s trip to Hamilton Accies to secure a top-half finish.

“It’s in our hands to get to the top-six ourselves,†Kerr said.

“We’ve got to be confident now, though we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves.

“There’s still two games to go until the split but we’re confident we can definitely get there.â€
