Do We Need A New Left Back?

imo It's one of / if not the weakest area in the team but the laddy Holt deserves a second season, McGinn had a steep learning curve at RB his first season and 'for me' he's come on leaps and bounds. but we should be looking at all potential alternatives if we are looking to continually improve the squad.

Scored a brilliant goal for Cowdenbeath against us (it was the first in the 2-0 defeat under Hartley, Stewart got the 2nd). I was surprised when Killie released him as thought he was highly regarded there (think I remember him featuring at left back a few times against us). Raith fans were completely slating him last year but he's now a hero to them.

My instinct is that it's not a signing we should be making though but budget is everything. Holt has gotten a bit better I think and like pointed out above, McGinn had similar issues and has improved quite a bit. With the 3 at the back Hartley has done a few times, I also think that Holt looks a lot more comfortable.

Williams has a bit of experience playing at left back (he actually started his career there) and if we are to do the 3 at the back, I imagine he'll be more than capable of filling in. Meggatt suffered another injury this week but he's under contract and it'd cost money to offload him. I reckon with those players, we are well covered.

If we were to bring someone in though (say Meggatt was offloaded), I wouldn't be against this player but I think it'd maybe be a bit similar to Holt in that he comes from a lower level, has a history of a slow start and is also relatively young. None of those are necessary bad attributes but I'd maybe like someone who's got a bit more experience and maybe who can cover at centre back and be solid defensively. I don't know who that magical left back could be but I'm thinking of a player like Brian Easton.

No harm in looking to strengthen all areas but think we've got to make moves for a defensive mid (apart from the young guys, we've only really got McGowan and Ross who can play centrally and deep and if one of them gets injured, Harkins is our only other option and I don't think he's at all suited to play that role) and a centre back first.

I'll put another player into consideration - Lewis Toshney. Technically, he's a decent enough player and he's physically pretty fit. Got through his tough spell with injuries and recently been getting praised recently playing in midfield (and also has picked up plenty of experience playing across the back line). Under contract unfortunately but just got to see if there is a release clause. Not just suggesting him because we know who he is, I think he could do very well under Hartley and would certainly play a role for us (even if he doesn't live up to hype, he can cover in a lot of positions).

See Ross County have released LB Jamie Reckord, worth a punt??

Just come here to say that actually.

Looked very impressive against us at Dens last season and thought he was one of the better players in the league at that position and I'm pretty sure many viewed him as their player of the year. This season though, their support seems to have completely slating him and after booting Dougie Imrie a couple of months back, he hasn't got a look in, even in an injury crisis.

Only 24 and looks in very good physical shape. Fast and got a long throw on him.

Ross County have about 12 fans and no one really seems to know anything up there but I'd speculate that something has maybe happened behind the scenes that has led to this happening. If he's going on a reasonable wage, he could be a shout to provide competition if Meggatt does go. Don't think good players ever suddenly turn bad.

I think that there was a falling out between himself and the management, after he got himself sent off against Hamilton in February and he never played for them again.

Interestingly, his first goal for Ross County was against Us in February 2015.
