I Was There On This Day: 1980 Dundee 5 - 1 Celtic

Was a young lad in the Derry with My Grand Dad, Dad and Uncle to watch this game. Remember Celtic scoring in the first few minutes and thinking this was going to be a bad day for us. Never expected the result.

There's not that many teams that have put 5 past Celtic or Rangers and we can say we have done it to both of them :)

I used to play in the Midlands amateur league in the early 70's, and all of us were Dundee fans, so if our game was near enough, we used to go to Dens for the last few minutes, when the gates were opened to let people leave early. By the time of this game, I'd moved to Aberdeen.

My old team pals were playing at either Fairmuir or the pitches on the Kingsway, beside the college on Old Glamis Road that day. They told me someone with a radio had said Celtic were 1-up early in the game, and with a series of loud roars in the distance, they were sure The Dee had taken another pasting like the 8-1 a few years earlier from Stein's Lisbon Lions.

Up to Dens in a couple of cars, they were puzzled at the sight of Celtic fans leaving early....and took some convincing when the guy on the open gate said it was 5-1 Dundee! I think I watched the Sportscene or Scotsport highlights on vhs till the tape wore out :)

The Ibrox game though.....that has to be one of Dundee's finest ever wins....the day Dundee fans knew we were good enough to win the title. Along with the Cologne 8-1 & Anderlecht 4-1, those were the kind of performances that caused Bob Crampsey to write, on several occasions, that he thought the Dundee side of 1961 to 1964 was Scotland's best in his lifetime, even better than the Lisbon Lions......and a few years before the Cloggies claimed to have invented Total Football. All they invented was a new name for what Dees of GeeDee's generation grew up with.   :jawdrop:

Couldn't face going to that game and went up to my see my mate in Aberdeen who was a mutton molester. Gave my season ticket to another mate and said "can't bear to go, the score will be 5 -1 or something like that".

Well, my crystal ball was obviously a bit misty as I got the score right but wrong! Still, as a Dundee fan in Aberdeen when we humped Celtic to help Aberdeen win the league I had a great night out and didn't put my hand in my pocket once. Still seek to have missed it though.

Shouldn't have let my memories of the 8 - 1 game influence me. Talk about ups and downs as a Dundee fan.

I was playing football up at longforgan that day, we heard early on that Celtic had scored, then after our game listening to the radio, whoever was commentating said ---and here is the shock score from dens park, obviously we were all expecting the score to be worse than the 8-1 score, when he said the score the noise inside the car was incredible and one of be guys was an Arab, great memories, some good, some bad, but we still support the Dee's no matter what, as has been said many many times, it's in the blood,
