Mixu Paatelainen: Dundee Would Love To Relegate Dundee United

Mixu Paatelainen last night insisted Dundee United are on a mission to avoid their worst possible nightmare – losing their top-flight status at Dens Park.

The Premiership’s basement club are staring relegation in the face as they trail second-bottom Kilmarnock by eight points with just five games left, beginning with Sunday’s visit of Hamilton to Tannadice.

Should Paatelainen’s side lose at home to Accies and Kilmarnock win away at Inverness, they would face the dreaded prospect of having their fate sealed with defeat by Dundee on Monday 2 May when they make the short trip to Dens for a televised fixture.

Killie don't need to beat Inverness for it to happen if United get beat by Hamilton.

Killie getting 2 points in their 2 games before the Dundee derby opens up the scenario if United lose this Sunday.

If United draw against Hamilton, Killie need 3 points from their 2 games for it to happen.

If United beat Hamilton, Killie need 6 points in order for it to happen.

I think!?

For Mixu to be saying things like:

“We believe we can win matches. If someone tells me we can’t beat Hamilton, Dundee, Caley Thistle, Partick Thistle and Kilmarnock – I’ll disagree. It’s very unlikely we will win all the matches, but we can win them. I don’t know how many we need to win. I really don’t."

...shows how clueless he really is.

(I know, press spin, and all, but even so...)

If United win on Sunday I don't think it will be possible for us to mathematically relegate them as a Kilmarnock win v Accies the following week would mean they would be 9 behind Hamilton with 12 to play for going into the derby. If we were to beat them it would be 9 with 9 to play for (They would be all but down, but not officially).

There are 9 different permutations going by Cobra on another thread, Utd could already be down going into the derby leaving 8 permutations, 4 that we could relegate them and 4 that we couldn't. Haven't checked it out myself though, I'm just assuming Cobra's correct as he's usually quite thorough.

It's this simple - Killie win and United draw on Sunday and we are guaranteed the chance to put them down.

Killie won't beat ICT unfortunately. Also don't think Hamilton will beat our disgusting, anti social neighbours - draw might be on though.

I think it'll be a few weeks yet before the final nail is driven in by someone else not us - having said that I really, really hope I'm completely wrong and we get the chance to do it a week on Monday.

Wouldn't be so sure about that. Inverness aren't exactly setting the heather alight and Killie had a good win last time out and will be fighting for their lives.
