That goal is on it mate, It's the first one that's missing. It's a little too bright in some sections of the pitch so I'll have to find some way of making it darker.

The reason the opening goal (Gillie, I think?) is missing is that the BBC live transmission was when the "Eurovision" link was still in its infancy.....for those not born then, there was no satellite link (Sputnik had been launched into orbit only 5 years earlier), it was by cable under the sea, together with the inter-continental phone lines.

England's champions (Ipswich) were knocked out in the first round, so BBC took the opportunity to cover Dundee's match at the Heysel Stadium. Anderlecht had knocked out the great Real Madrid side in the first round, and became 2nd favourites to win the cup....and they were seen as the "new rising stars" of Europe, which is possibly why the match was available live.

At the start of BBC's programme, I can still recall the presenter (Peter Dimmock, I think) introducing it with "We'll shortly be joining the Eurovision link to see Dundee play Anderlecht, but we're having some technical problems getting the link connected. However, the good news for Dundee fans is that their team is already one goal ahead."

What followed was "total football", long before the Dutch thought they'd invented it. The pitch was very heavy & cutting up, from a day of rain, but Dundee's passing moves were still fast, accurate, and ripped Anderlecht, who included the "Beckham of the 60's" in Paul van Himst, apart. The Anderlecht manager said Dundee were one of the best sides he'd seen, and much better than Real Madrid.

It's a great pity the technology didn't exist to capture events as we can now (VHS tape was still 15 years in the future), to let younger Dundee fans witness just how good that side was.....BBC didn't even send a camera crew to Dens for the opening round against Cologne, it was radio only (Kenneth Wolstenholme...."I've never witnessed scoring like this in any European match").

What remains of that night in the Heysel was not new to us though.....Dundee had played exactly the same way at Ibrox the previous season, winning 5-1 on the way to the title. They also did the same to teams the season after, on the way to Hampden & a record goalscoring run from Gillie.

Just have to say, amazing post and thank you for an insight into those days and a little bit of history.

Looking forward to the 11 min version!! Apparently that game is still Anderlecht's record attendance of around 64,000 albeit it was moved to the Heysel.

Incidentally I scored a penalty in the right hand goal when on a visit to the empty stadium with a fellow Dee pal.

that was also the end where the Heysel disaster kicked off.
