Was hoping it would be O' Dea. Can't doubt Mcpake's passion and commitment but for me he just isn't good enough and would have him last in my defensive pecking order.

100% agree. Feel Hartley will play McPake out of some kind of loyalty, but we really should be looking at an upgrade.

Hartley has already made clear that McPake and O'Dea are the two players he's happy to have as captain. I'm guessing McPake has got the nod because he's coming up for his third season and so more established at the club. The manager seems quite good at managing the dressing room so this is probably the right decision.

O'Dea and McPake might prove to be an excellent partnership. I'm looking forward to seeing them play together.

I think you're right mate and haven't written off a McPake/O'Dea double act.

Its been discussed before but if McPake isn't playing I'm sure O'Dea will just just as competent stepping in. The off park stuff is probably more important than the on park and the manager is on the sidelines shouting instructions too. Ideally I would want the captain to be a first team regular but if he's not then I don't think it will be that big a deal. In our case we've got a few who can step in no bother, having both the character and having done it before.

I assume from this that Gary Harkins is going to get a lot less game time.

I think that's entirely up to Harkins. If he's playing well he'll start every week. Last season McGowan started on the bench and a few months later he was arguably our most important player.

Exactly this.  My get feeling is that the seasons early games will be a back three of JE/LMcP/DD, if McPake is fit enough.  The captaincy was a toss up between McPake and O'Dea as far as I am concerned.  Not fussed either way.  You don't need an armband to be a leader on the park
