Who could lead out Dundee in James McPake’s absence?

Recommended Posts

James McPake will wear the captain’s armband for Dundee next season.

However, the Northern Irishman could miss the start of the season as he battle back from a horrific knee injury he suffered in the Derby back in January.

That then begs the question of who will lead Dens Park side on the first weekend of the 2016/17 campaign?

Here we take a look at the other options available in the Dark Blues’ ranks.

DARREN O’DEA

The stand-out candidate to take the role. Former Ireland international O’Dea is a leader on and off the park.

Probably only missed out on the top job because McPake had been at the club a lot longer and done his time as vice-captain.

A class character, work ethic and willingness to go the extra mile has seen him become a popular figure at Dens.

GARY HARKINS

The big question about Harkins is whether he will be selected, much like was the case this time last year.

Trusted with the armband after Thomson departed, he is an obvious candidate with his experience.

The gaffer has mentioned him in dispatches but, with James Vincent on the scene and Craig Wighton getting better and better, it seems hard to find a starting place for him.

PAUL McGOWAN

Off-field troubles in the past have undermined his on-field success at Dens somewhat.

But it looks like all of that is behind the midfielder now.

Every team needs this type of player. He just never gives up grafting and is constantly talking on the park.

An able deputy but probably a few ahead of him in line.

SCOTT BAIN

Dundee shot-stopper Scott Bain will be shouting for Hibs in the Scottish Cup Final against Rangers.

Bit of a left-field one but not totally out of the question.

A 100% guaranteed starter and is becoming an increasing influence in the dressing-room. Came as a quiet lad from Alloa and is now one of the more vocal in the camp.
