A long, lazy summer, spent on some white sandy beach, beer in hand, without a ball in sight was bliss to many a player back in times gone by. Those days are long gone for the modern pro, says Dundee winger Danny Williams.

With so much focus on fitness in the game, especially under Paul Hartley at Dens Park, players just can’t get away with what they used to in previous generations.

Although, Williams, very much of the new breed of footballer, says that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

The Dark Blues players were handed just two weeks break at the end of the season, before they had to undertake preparation programs for the new campaign.

And Williams reckons they’ve come back fit and strong, primed and ready to begin their summer in earnest tonight, when they travel to Dumbarton (7.30pm kick-off).

“The summer has passed really quick, but for me that is not necessarily a bad thing,” he said.

“It is good to be back playing football so soon after closing up last season.

“Lads are very different these days, everyone keeps themselves fit in the summer.

“If you had been able to see our sessions since coming back you would see the intensity.

“We are putting the hard work in now with the hope that repays us when the season gets tough, which, at some stage, it inevitably will.”

Having enjoyed so much success in his three-year spell at Inverness, Williams is keen to replicate that at Dens.

“I am looking forward to opening a new chapter in my career at Dundee tonight when we play Dumbarton,” he said.

“Inverness was amazing for me. We achieved so much as a football club in the three years I was there.

“I hope we can do something similar here at Dundee.

“On a personal level I’ve got great memories.

“It was the club that gave me the chance to play football full-time.

“But now, having been up there for three years, it is time for me to kick on as a player.”

As well as carrying the same aims as the rest of the squad — which is a top-six berth — Williams has his own ambitions for the season ahead.

The wideman continued: “I have my own personal goals — one of them is to make sure I get on the scoresheet more.

“It is something I didn’t do enough of at Inverness. Obviously, if I am scoring goals, with help from the other lads, then I know the team will be better for it.

“My goals go hand in hand with those of the team.

“I want to push on as a player and I know Dundee want to push on as a club by climbing into the top half of the Premiership table.”

However, while he is confident, he accepts achieving success this season will not be easy.

“It isn’t going to be easy for us. The league is even tougher this year,” said the 28-year-old.

“The top six is still the aim, though.

“And to be honest, from what I have seen here, I see absolutely no reason why we cannot do that.

“As a player you want to be playing in the big leagues with the big tests and, to be honest, I think the level in Scotland has gone up a notch over the summer, seeing all of the big-name players and managers coming up here.

“It’s an exciting time to be a part of Scottish football. And we don’t want to be spectators, we want to play our part, too.”
