Dundee’s new boys in the spotlight: will they hit the ground running?

Dundee have added five new faces to their ranks so far this summer, with one more — a centre-half — said to be close.

After two games, against Dumbarton and Alloa, and a pre- season training camp in Austria under their belts, it’s starting to become a little clearer what the quintet will add to the Dark Blues’ squad.

Having been away with the first-team in Obertraun, as well in attendance at both summer matches to date, Tele football writer Liam Kennedy gives his assessment of Paul Hartley’s additions, and where he thinks they may slot in this campaign.

MARK O’HARA

Age: 20.

Former clubs: Kilmarnock.

Career apps/goals: 63(20 as sub)/0.

Last season: 33/0.

While signed primarily as a central midfielder, former Killie man O’Hara can cover a number of positions.

Played mainly at right-back in his early career, O’Hara can also operate in central defence or left-back if needed.

I expect him to add plenty of energy and some bite as well as considerable height to the Dark Blues midfield. Expect O’Hara to be a central part of the Paul’s plans when picking his best XI.

Verdict: Starter. Probably in the centre of midfield.

YORDI TEIJSSE

Age: 23.

Former clubs: Quick Boys, VV Ter Leede, RKSV Pancratius, Almere City.

Career apps/goals: N/A.

Last season: N/A.

Making the step from amateurs to full-time football is a big enough step. Taking that leap while on foreign soil is even more of a mammoth task. But that’s exactly what faces the Dutchman.

Teijsse has been prolific in the lower reaches of Dutch football and the hope is he can translate that to the Premiership. It won’t be easy, though.

Yes, he knows where the back of the net is but will he enjoy as much success against defenders of better quality?

Verdict: Will find a starting place hard to come by.

JAMES VINCENT

Age: 26.

Former clubs: Inverness, Kidderminster, Stockport.

Career apps/goals: 168(49)/14.

Last season: 18/2.

One of the nicest guys you will meet off the park as well as a real talent on it. Vincent can be the answer to the Dark Blues lack of goals from midfield. Injuries cost him too many appearances last season and he will be hoping for a better return this time around.

It’s hard to see where Vincent and Gary Harkins fit into the team but it’s not a bad problem for the manager to have.

Verdict: When fit expect him to play in an advanced role.

DANNY WILLIAMS

Age: 28.

Former clubs: Inverness, Kendal.

Career apps: 75(33)/6.

Last season: 43/1.

Not only can the former Caley man operate as a winger he can also slot in behind a main striker, play up top and all across the midfield four.

Has that bit of pace to cause defenders problems and, despite his slight frame, is physically strong. Could help provide the Dark Blues punters with the genuine width they’ve been crying out for these past few seasons.

Verdict: Expect Paul to use Williams as a utility forward player. May play off left in a 4-2-3-1.

MICHAEL DUFFY

Dundee's new attacking midfielder Michael Duffy, on loan from Celtic for the upcoming season, scored against old club Alloa in the pre-season 1-1 draw. Age: 21.

Former clubs: Derry City, Celtic, Alloa (loan).

Career apps: 47(4)/15.

Last season: 38/3.

Just under 10 minutes into his Dundee pre-season debut he netted a strike which underlines the kind of quality he can bring.

Having found chances in Celtic’s ridiculously over-inflated squad impossible to come by, Duffy comes to Dens with something to prove. And judging by the flashes we have seen so far it looks like Paul might have nabbed himself a gem from his former club.

Can play in an advanced No 10 role, as well as wider if needed.

Verdict: Could find himself starting the league campaign if he impresses in the League Cup.
