A Greg Stewart hat-trick ensured a rampant Dundee got their first win of the season under their belts on home turf.

The Dark Blues took the lead at Dens on the quarter hour when Stewart, back fresh from 10 days out with a thigh problem, curled a left-footed free-kick , through a crowded area and into the the far corner from the right.

Within 11 minutes the visitors, who were impressive throughout the opening 45, were level – Frazer Wright bundled home after a goalmouth scramble.

To the home fans’ shock the Sons then edged in front – Gregor Buchanan hammered home from close range after he reacted quickest to a shot rebounding off the bar.

After a woeful opening half, the Dark Blues came out in the second with renewed vigour and were level within two minutes as Kane Hemmings doubled his season tally with a smart finish from a silky move started by that man Stewart.

The 26-year-old’s ball into the box was then nodded home powerfully by skipper Darren O’Dea for 3-2, before he added a trademark fourth with a jinking run and left foot rocket.

With time ticking away Stewart, who has had a £1.5million price tag slapped on his head this summer by club chiefs, added a fifth and his third when tucking home after a through ball by sub Mark O’Hara.

Hemmings put the icing on the cake in the 86th minute with a routine finish, latching on to a through ball before stroking home with ease.
