I served my time there as a sheet metal  worker in the early 70s. My boss was the late Jim Strachan who was on the board of the Dee during the Angus Cook era.

Shame to read the news.

No being political here, because this situation is affecting all of the UK .....Foundries/factories ship builders/coal mines etc, no just individually closing,

but totally finished AND GONE!!  I'm focusing on the Dundee (especially tayside & fife area) I served my enginnering apprenticeship in Bonar-Longs,

as well as working in some other Industrial Estates    All now vanished.& into waste ground. Is there anyone left in the UK that actually produces any

thing at all, in any of the industries mentioned above !! Or in anything at all now. Probably all manufacturing jobs/skills, have now gone forever !!

I agree.

I wasn't clever enough to stay on at school or go to uni. So an apprenticeship was the way to go. The factory floor was a terrific place to learn lessons, respect and discipline that have lasted all my life. Along with keeping me gainfully employed and able to fend for my family.a

Aye Rev ....I know that.  I think they tried to give us awe fancy titles to make us feel special. Although it was nae mair than a cover up, for very low wages and a lot of heavy labouring. Half way through my apprenticeship eh was telt eh had graduated to the toolroom (eh think it was a pretence o' promotion to show they appreciated us/me)  So eh spent the rest of time learning the finer intricacies of fine tool manufacturing/engineering .... (weel that's whit they telt me)

At the time eh was there, there was up to 4 apprentices to every journeyman (cheap labour)

And the wage started at £2 and 6 shullin's ..(Clock in No 381) ...Aye Happy Days (shyte) :(
