Opening day of the season.

Dundee 0-1 Partick

Starting line-up: Roy, Griffin, Dixon, Rae, MacKenzie, Mann, Harris, McDonald, Deasley, Trialist, Gates

Not having a dig at those guys but we've come a long way since then.

Who the trialist was that day, I'm not sure.

Looking through my records (adjusts specs on nose) the trialist was Amick Ciani (a quick google reveals he ended up at Ross Co and on loan at Raith without ever really playing for either), who was substituted and replaced by Gavin Swankie.

Ciani? Bloody hell. Well done. Never heard that name before.

I seem to recall the fans paid Swankie's wages (I might be wrong).

Who was Gates?

Where's Kevin McDonald these days? I remember we were ecstatic when he signed a new deal, meaning we got more from Burnley + sell-on and other clauses. Then they unexpectedly got promoted and he simply wasn't ready for such a massive step-up so essentially flopped. 'Twas a shame because the talent was there, but needed a season or so in the English second tier to nurture it.

Yes, a proportion of his wages was covered by fans contributions. Money well spent...?

He was held in high esteem by a lot of Dees. Personally, I never was a big fan. You could tell he'd tear up a lower level but for us I didn't think he was quite good enough.

Different kind of player but remember Freddee? He would beat his man but then take the ball over the touch-line? psml watching that guy at times.

Scott Gates. Another youngster that came through at the same time as Dixon, McDonald and Robertson but didn't make the same impact. From memory he was a small wide player. I think he made his debut away to Brechin (we won 3-1 - a highlight of that season...) as Kernaghan scrabbled about for answers to our disastrous season under him. Gates ended up at Arbroath before going to the juniors.

Edit to say: McDonald signed for Fulham the other day. Not sure if he played tonight against Newcastle? I think his sudden fall out of favour at Burnley was more a disciplinary thing than anything to do with ability. Did he not walk out after being substituted - or something like that?

He was good on his day, he just didn't have enough of them.

McDonald played really well for Fulham tonight mate, still a real classy player, done great at Wolves last season, think he  had one of the top assist records in the championship last year. Range of passing is excellent and he pops up with the odd goal too. 1-0 Fulham it finished and he never looks flustered or hurried on the ball. Loved him at dens and always looked out for him since.

That team looks utterly dire truth be told. We really are in a good place now. I am excited about the new season. B)

Aye, McDonald walked out of Burnley's game against City. He was substituted at half time and got changed then went straight to the pub.

Ye kin tak' the boy awa oot o' Dundee, but you'll never tak Dundee oot o' the boy.

I believe you are correct. Think the game ended  in a 6-1 defeat and was similar at half time, he was subbed and had some of his mates from Carnoustie down to watch. I believe the report at the time said he went to the pub close by to the stadium with his mates.

Went down a treat with his manager.

What would Hartley do in this case ??
