Dens Park Main Stand

Recommended Posts

Does anybody actually know when the Main Stand at Dens was erected? Was it when we moved to Dens?

I seem to remember when I was a kid going to the games overhearing somebody say that the stand was part of Ibrox at one time and that it was gifted or we bought it from Rangers, does any body know? Or am I havering!!;)

I'm sure I heard from someone that the seats were from the old ibrox before renovation.

That's what I always thought as well.

The rumour about the stand coming from Ibrox wasn't true at all as it was an Archibald Leitch original, but utilised seats from Ibrox that were surplus to requirement.

The ground was redeveloped when in 1919 when the club purchased the site for £5,000. A two-tier main stand with terracing on three sides was completed in two years, at a cost of £60,000.
In 1959 a roof was erected on the south side with floodlights added the following year. More cover was added on the west side after the club enjoyed their first venture into Europe in the early 1960’s.

The above is an extract from the link, I don't know how accurate it is.

Heard the seats thing was nonsense also.

An Arab untruth repeated until passed off as fact over the years.

In regards to the move/stadium redevelopment:

If we were to stay at Dens the main stand would have to go sadly! A lot of folk say its protected(it would be demolished anyway if we moved??) but I'm sure similar things were said about the main stands at Easter Road(replaced) and Tynecastle(pending replacement)

I agree The North Stand is pretty iconic but its a shadow of its former self since the enclosure was redeveloped.

There is lots of room on that side to build a stand that runs alongside the pitch to match the two behind the goals.

As has been said "Difficult Decisions Ahead" if any of these stories are true!!!

Enough examples of Archibald Leitch stands remain for listed building consent to not be too difficult to obtain (although technically it's not our problem).

It will however start to become increasingly difficult to demolish such stands, should more and more clubs with them want to move or redevelop their stadia.

You are correct that it is a load of rubbish that the Derry got it's name because some of it came from Ibrox. It is more likely that it was because the choir in the South Enclosure used to used to sing protestant sectarian songs at Dens in the late 1960's and 70's
