Oor Bobby

Recommended Posts

As an aside and given all the ins and outs actual or rumoured

As most of you will know the Oor Wullie Bucket Trail, in place over the school holidays in Dundee, features an Oor Wullie sculpture decorated in a classic 1962 Dundee kit. To make it an even bigger stand out it has the number 3 and the name COX on its back.

The sculptures, all 70 of them, will be going under the hammer at an auction with all proceeds going to The ARCHIE Foundation’s appeal to raise funds to create a brand new twin operating theatre paediatric surgical suite for the Tayside Children’s Hospital at Ninewells.

The society board feels it would be appropriate to try to secure the Oor Bobby sculpture for Dundee fans and to place it in what would seem to be its natural permanent home at Dens Park. The final location of the statue, should we succeed in the purchase, would be by agreement with the club but the Bobby Cox Stand concourse would seem a decent and logical initial proposal.

The auction is scheduled for 13th September at The Rep and the society has registered an interest in this sculpture. We have also contacted other groups that we thought may have an interest in the sculpture, including Bobby’s family and Dundee Football Club, and as far as we can see the way is clear for us to go ahead with the proposed purchase.

Obviously the society doesn’t want to be bidding against any individual or group so would be more than happy to work with anyone that might have similar or other intentions for Oor Bobby. Should anyone be planning to make their own bid for this sculpture, and who would consider working with the society to secure the sculpture, we ask that they contact Brian Lawrence by email [email protected]

Thank you on behalf of the Dundee FC Supporters Society

Good initiative to try to consolidate DFC fans bids....apart from hopefully ensuring the Society manages to acquire Oor Bobby for its 'rightfu' hame' in the BC, this will also ensure the combined bid figure maximises the income to Archie, for a very important local hospital facility.

Glad to hear you've contacted the family too, as I recall, they were a pleasure to deal with re the ball from the Muirton championship-winning game.

Can I ask if you've contacted the DSA to see if they, or any individual member club, would like to participate with the Society....a joint effort would be good to see.

Good luck!

Hi all

There is a Crowdfunding site set up for anyone that wants to donate and help out with this. All donations are welcome. The initial target is £1962 - we did consider £02052016 but it just looks too ambitious :P

Please distribute the below link on your Facebooks, Linkedins, Twitters and anything else people do these days to get messages out. The intention is to make sure every penny raised by Crowdfunding will go to the sculpture and ultimately therefore to The ARCHIE Foundation.

Obviously it's possible that we could be unsuccessful in securing the sculpture. In that case all the cash raised by Crowdfunding will most likely be diverted to the club or donated to charity. We haven't discussed this possible eventuality yet so suggestions would be welcome.

I'll get my tin hat, it's a BIG NO from me, I'd rather DFCSS spent the money on season tickets they can hand out weekly to schools,

i think if we are to honour Bobby Cox, then I'd be all for donating towards a bronze statue, I think it's a bit insulting to honour him with a "tin cartoon character" painted with a Dundee strip on,

im all for the reason these "oor willies" are being auctioned, and hope it's a success for the organisers, but come on, our own legend deserves better.

No tin hat required. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and yours is as valid as anyone else's.

I'd be interested to hear how your idea of distributing season tickets that could be handed out weekly to schools could be managed. I had an idea similar to that for this season but there are some stumbling blocks and we've run out of time but might look at something for half seasons and / or next season. Please email me with more detail on how you see this working.

I'd think it would be simple, buy so many kids tickets, with adult tickets as supervisors, contact schools, and PTA, even scouts/boys brigades, brownies/guides, and ask who would be interested in taken up the free offer, could maybe even work with the club to have these tickets for the seats in the lower main stand.

while your on, did anything come of the war memorial ?
